Replacing the top would sound like a likely culprit, as laptops usually have a sensor either on the base or the top that is pushed down by something on the other half when the lid is closed.

that was the second thing I was going to suggest. you might need to check and see if the Reed Switch on the inside of the display works. you can test this by taking a fairly strong magnet and run it over sides, bottom and top of the display case. It will usually trip it. Most likely the top though, although, the Dual USB iBooks and the MacBooks have it towards the hinge. The Magnet won't hurt the screen, but do be away to not leave it there too long.

If that doesn't work, you might have broken a wire on the reed cable. you might need to solder it if it's just broken. I would say, since the display is not really that complex on a pismo (been inside it myself a few times) give it a go and peak around. see if you can find the bugger. Also, if it STILL Doesn't work, take a multimeter and put it up to it and have it set to measure resistance, and then put the magnet next to it. if that magnet doesn't trip it and cause the resistance to go to 0, then you might need a new reed switch.

Just throwing out some possibilities

I think you got an old version too.

There is supposed to be a magnet attached to the inside of the top case. I believe that the reed switch is beside the microphone in the display.
