Posted by: pee-air on 2007-09-09 12:43:56 Why not just use a web based app for downloading YouTube videos? That's what I do. Also, if you're running Mozilla or Firefox in OS X, you can get some plugins from the Mozilla page. I've used them in the past with success as well. Generally, though, I snag so few videos from youtube that I typically just use web-based apps for downloading them.

Posted by: MacMan on 2007-09-09 16:28:24 Take a look at this web-based ripper: http://youtubex.com/
Just cut and paste the URL of the video you want into the box and hit "Download". YouTube videos are Flash-based so it is best to add the ".flv" extension when downloading them in OSX.
You will also need a flash player to view the videos, I would suggest something like Wimpy FLV Player.

VLC, my favourite media player supports FLV, as of the latest version. I use VLC alot but I find it sometimes crashes when I try to skip to another part of the video. One of the best features of VLC is the ability to transcode videos into different formats like MPEG 4.

Posted by: Temetka on 2007-09-10 20:27:34 I was gonna post the Safari solution, but figured someone else would.
Macs make it so easy to steal stuff.

Posted by: iMac600 on 2007-09-11 00:31:52 For the record, to play back the FLV files I use QuickTime with the Perian plugin.

If you want to convert them to a standard video format, then you can use iSquint.

Posted by: Temetka on 2007-09-11 17:43:12 Dude you rock!
I had no idea that quicktime could play .flv files!
I just tested about 10 .flv files I have and they all played flawlessly and with LESS cpu usage than Wimpy FLV player.
God I love quicktime and its associated plugins!

Posted by: MacMan on 2007-09-11 18:41:40 Wow, this has solved all the video problems I have encountered. Not only an FLV plugin for Quicktime, but a free app that converts FLVs into mp4s!!! This is great, thanks for the links! 😀 😀😀

I love quicktime Wow, that's not something you hear very often! Do Windows Me and Norton 360 also happen to be favourites of yours by any chance? 😛

Posted by: iMac600 on 2007-09-12 05:51:53 Another big QuickTime fan here. I honestly can not stand VLC, sometimes it just makes me want to rip my machine to shreds whenever I run it. Crashes just about every bloody chance it gets. To be fair, I have heard success stories with VLC quite often, but none of them have ever happened to me.
QuickTime on the other hand always runs perfectly, and with the Perian and Flip4Mac extensions, it does just about everything VLC can do (without all the unnecessary extras).

Posted by: MacMan on 2007-09-12 06:35:38 I like Quicktime but the latest version (7.2.0) seems to have some problems playing videos in Safari on my machine. Most of the time it only plays the audio but no video. I have tried numerous things but to no avail. However it doesn't seem to be affecting Camino or Firefox so I reckon this is a Safari-related bug.
Best thing about Quicktime 7.2 - full screen mode!
