Cairo ShootOut
Posted by: joshc on 2007-08-29 02:33:24
OK folks, you should be glad to hear this. I dug out Cairo ShootOut, an old 80s Mac game - and I've put it back into distribution here:

In memory of Duane Blehm.

Enjoy!

Way to keep the program alive! I recommend this for anyone with a System 6 Mac. DON'T run this in Multifinder or System 7; you'll be asking for problems with clicking outside of the window. Make sure any screen saver that uses corner activation is either disabled or has that feature turned off.

Some hints from a guy who once made it to LEVEL 23...have a Cairo font decoder handy (the old Mac Bibles had them), make sure you set the speed to match your Mac, study the Cairo font (many symbols look alike--the flowers are a good example), use a clean mouse at the quickest tracking setting, and take some time to get used to the feel of the game if you've never played it before.

We should all be thankful for Duane's parents, who put the unlocked version in the public domain, and for the man they contacted to modify the program. It's a shame Duane's not around anymore, I would have liked to send for the source code (there was an offer for it in the older, shareware version). I've got to say, this could pass as commercial software, it's that good--I don't usually say that about shareware/freeware.

Enjoy this one--it's free, fun, addicting, unlimited, legal, and shows off the capabilities of old Macs quite well!

Yeah, it's a very good game, and deserves more attention. It's one of my favorites for System 6 along with Space Invaders and Rock Paper Scissors.
