So... next year!
Posted by: ~tl on 2007-08-20 06:37:20
I know we've barely finished with this year's 'challenge... but I guess the sooner we start preparing for next year the better! It's probably a good to keep the momentum up and get a few details sorted out now.

All in all, I'd say that this year was a resounding success. Congrats and many thanks to Dale for running the thing. You did a great job!

I think the format this year worked really well. I also thing that having one person "hosting" the 'challenge was a good move. I'd like to see that continue -- have somebody volunteer to be in charge for a year and let them make the final decisions on format, keep the website updated etc. As Dale said in the interview on Retromaccast -- design by committee never works!

Since it's been such a success this year, I think next year can only be better. It sounds like we've already got the two guys from Retromaccast pledged in for it!

So I'd say, keep it much the same as this year. No rules, just one month of vintage computing!

Maybe you could share some of the details of what advertising you did, how you ran the competition, etc, here Dale. It might help next person get started -- unless of course you want to host it again [😉] ]'>

I agree that we should keep it much the same.

I'd love to be more involved next year, weather it requires participating or just helping!

I would love to participate in it next year. I'll be sure to have my Quadra 650 ready as well as my PB Duo 230 which needs some fixing up.

SHHHHSSSSSHH! dont use my real name! my identity must remain a mystery just like spiderman!

ahem... if it turns out that nobody but nobody wishes to do it next year then i will do it. providing of course i am around and involved in such things.

yes i think that having one person take charge is the best way. saying that i think it would work to have some discussion on 'form' of the event.

the details should be left to one person, but there is room to discuss the shape, colour, feel etc of it all. IMHO

its a community thing which makes any discussion difficult, but we would i think, want someone to 'play well' with it if they took charge. i only did this after all because the servers went down and time became short.

should be vote in some way on a 'proposal' put forth but folk, or do we wait for the first bold person to stagger forward?

do we want a manager or an artistic director? both have merit and both have different methods too. i for one prefer the artistic director, but that just me.

from discussion with others during the early stages i know others would like a more formal route through.

theres my 2cents - one person should be in charge. some discussion on the 'general' direction.

however - how do we pick the person if two folk want to do it?

Yeah, I think that's the best way to do it. It's a community project, so obviously we have to listen to the input of the community when it comes to the general direction of the thing... but it does need someone to take charge once that's sorted out and to bring it to completion. I don't think any major decisions should be made without at least some input from the community though.

As for it coming down to deciding between two people -- as long as they were happy to work at it together then I can't see it being a problem really. Even if it was a small group in charge of sorting out the details, it's still going to work better than the community at large. I do like the idea of having an individual "host" for the competition each year, so if we can stick to that it'd be good.

i would go so far as saying that an 'individual host' is a must. its the only way to work the different emails and web contacts.

i say we pick someone now! lets do it - me and you now!!!!

hmmm lets see - who should we curse!!!

hey - i am being dynamic.

This year's RetroChallenge was a great success me thinks, and Da... I mean wgoodf did a very good job of running it and keeping things organized. I have a strong suspicion that the uptake next year is going to be greater, especially now that it has been featured on the RetroMacCast.

As I mentioned on the BBS, I'd being willing to take on the job next year (having some experience in these matters), though I suspect I would be inclined to delegate a bit if participation continues to expand.

OTOH, I'd be quite happy to let the artist formerly known as Dale continue to steer the boat.

What if we were to hold a sort of mini election of everyone who would be willing to take the job?

i think i like that a lot better than spiderman!

well we could surely say that luddite is our man at this point - well i assume he is a man, what with the picture and everything, could be a hairless... never mind.

anyway - luddite is the nomination so far. we have something to hang onto someone. should others wish to put themselves forward at a later date then we can discuss that as we need to - nominations/proposals/joint working and so on.

but we can say that just now luddite is the public face of the challenge?

MAKE UP!

I think perhaps we should allow a little time for others to speak up before anyone gets crowned, appointed by God, or otherwise made noble.

(but I do appreciate the pageantry)
