Freecycle Beige G3!
Posted by: IPNixon on 2007-08-10 15:20:13
I just got back from picking up a freecycle find; a Beige G3 MT 😀

The guy said, "Oh, I forgot to tell you, there's a couple surprises with this, too." Turns out he gave me an external Jaz drive and a Wacom tablet 😀

I have no Jaz disks, and haven't the space to try the tablet. But I will as soon as I clean up around here. 🙂

Specs:

G3 333MHz

128MB RAM

10GB HD

Internal Zip 100

OS 9.0.4 currently

It's got a lot of pro apps on it; Dreamweaver 3, Flash 3, Adobe Illustrator 6, 8, and 9, and Photoshop 4, 5, and 6

Woot! 😀

Oh yeah, and I'm posting from it, too 😛

Nice. Just so you know, if the tablet is serial or ADB, it won't work in OS X.

Nice find, did it come with an scsi card and scsi hd?

It's serial. Since there are so many apps on it already in 9, if I do install X on it, I won't erase 9. 🙂

It has a thin-SCSI card, but I dunno what type of HD is inside.

Also forgot to mention it came with the original box 🙂

Some if the 333 MT's had an UWSCSI card and UWSCSI HD in them, normally a Beige use the built in IDE for HD and CDROM.

Some 333 MHz G3s also shipped w/ DVD-ROM drives and the exceedingly rare DVD Decoder/AV I/O personality card! But even if yours didn't, a free 333 MHz beige G3 is nothing to sneeze at.

Good find!

Peace,

Drew

The what now?? Is this a Wings card that takes the DVD decoder module from a Rage 128? (Same chipset IIRC)

Yes and no. It is a personality card, yes. No, it does not take the DVD decoder from a Rage 128. Rather, it has a DVD-decoder built-in. It also has AV I/O like the "Wings" card, but it is more than a Wings card...

It only came with some select 333 MHz G3s that also had the DVD-ROM drive (and even then, I'm not sure all DVD-ROM equipped beige G3s had this card).

Peace,

Drew

Do you have one? Or any pictures? How can one identify one of these cards?

Never once have I seen a Mac within 100 miles of me on Freecycle

I have seen them pop up on eBay from time to time. (Stupid me didn't buy it the last time I saw one on eBay. The darn things are scarcer than hen's teeth...) And there is some documentation on the Apple sites about it, and a little mention of it in the Dev Notes. But, no, I don't have any pictures myself. I also don't have one of these cards for myself. But I can tell you that as soon as I see one on eBay, it's mine. ;-)

Peace,

Drew

That's a nice find there. 128MB RAM is good for OS 9 but if you really want to see it show it's colours then bump it up to 512MB or more. My G3 266MHz MT absolutely screams with 512MB and OS9.2.

Place a "Macs Wanted" ad and they will come to you. My best Freecycle score was a pair of beige G3's, 266 and 300mhz, but I also had to take a load of old PII and PIII machines to get them, which I really don't have room for, but they have a lot of nice parts I can reuse. I also got my G3 700 iMac that way. My newest 8600/250 was also part of a Freecycle curb alert. I went out at 2AM in the hopes it would still be there, and got lucky.

Man, my town is terrible for computers in freecycle. I have not seen one computer on freecycle sudbury or in any thrift store. It stinks that I only have one 68k mac (which has a fried power adapter but I'm getting a new one from a friend) but someone told me that when they went to a thrift store and saw 3 duos and a pc tower. Going tomorrow.

Not around here. I saw a G4 posted recently, but someone else snatched it up. I've posted requests a couple times, but nothing.

I got a freebie IIci off Craigslist awhile back, and thought that was good. It's my A/UX box now.
