68k only or PPC/others as well?

Well what do you think, should we keep the Wiki 68k only? Or should we extend it to cover PPCs and other vintage machines?

Since the forums cover PPCs, then I think it'd be logical to cover them on the Wiki as well...

My personal op would be to let PPC in but only after the 68K stuff (and probably Apple 1, ][ and ///) is setup and in place

Well yeah. Though a lot of the groundwork (setting up templates etc) will apply to both, so implementing PPC machines later shouldn't be too much work.

I say that we should let the lot in.

Well if the "68k" part of 68kMLA is to mean anything, the 68k stuff should get established first. Otherwise let's change our name to "Vintage MLA" or something - which wouldn't necessarily be bad.

That said, I have no objection to including non-68k hardware articles. The name (and theme/atmosphere it creates) establishes our "roots" but c'mon, we all like Apple stuff, regardless of age. If we stay 68k-only forever we'll eventually become an irrelevant, dying niche site. Life is change.

In keeping with the vintage spirit, an arbitrary limit like "nothing produced within the past three years" would not be inappropriate, but no limitation would be OK, too.

Personally, i reckon non-68k stuff is ok, but pre-OS X, if possible. I'd like to keep it to Mac OS 9.2 and below compatible hardware and software, if possible.

I like the idea of pre-OS X as well. Maybe the Beige G3s would be a bit of a grey area, but otherwise, that's a pretty good standard.

I also think that OS X things should be avoided on it.

I think we should start with the 68k, and move on from there

Maybe we can say pre-color (i.e. beige box) era. As of right now, that's 9+ years old. The industrial design of Macs stayed pretty constant through that timeframe.

Let the (beige) hordes in, too. Not only because of those 68k Macs, which can be upgraded to PPC...

I would agree that if PPCs are to be included, it should be the pre-OS X machines (and maybe more precisely as the pre-G3 machines).

The best tactic will probably be to complete and polish the 68K section first before moving into PPC land.

Simple way to put it is to allow Old World hardware and exclude New World. That seems to be the simple term for the requests so far.

The focus has to stay on 68k. If PPC doesn't swamp that focus then ok (but I fear it will). I am sure letting OS X in will result in everything else being swamped.

The original PPC used nubus, and most macs are PPC. :beige:

I hesitantly agree with letting in the OldWorld PPC Macs, but we shouldn't lose focus of our 68K roots. We ARE the 68KMLA, after all. 😉
