Posted by: tomlee59 on 2007-07-20 23:59:37 Good that you found one locally -- what do they weigh, something like 25-30 kg??! These things are heavy! They were made for the education market, so I guess protecting against theft was a concern. Filling them with depleted uranium evidently makes them impossible to steal. If you can't lift it, you can't steal it. 🙂

Posted by: jkoci on 2007-07-21 04:50:33 Nice. I got one off Freecycle a while back. Despite the weight I like the slide out drawer design. Everything is easy to get at. I recently upgraded the CD drive to a CDRW.

Posted by: coius on 2007-07-21 07:00:19 I ended up turning mine into a tower by slowely acquiring the parts. I bought the AIO from a homeless person (really, honest to god) for about $60USD. I gave him more money than it was worse so he could get food (he was not a boozer, i can tell. he was just kicked out of his house because he could not pay rent and he had some physical problems that kept him from working).
I did the tower because I wanted to run OS X on it and the internal video kept cutting out. I eventually put a RADEON 7000 Mac Edition into it. In the end, I gave it to a friend so he could have an OS X machine. he loves it to pieces. Every now and then, we do an upgrade. It has about 448MB of ram, a 466Mhz G3 B&W CPU, a wings card, Rev C ROM, rev 2 MLB, and 10/100/1000 Ethernet. as well as a Firewire/USB Combo card, an 80GB Hard drive, and a DVD/CD-RW in it to watch movies and burn discs. He loves it so much, he calls me now and then for us to get together and pit our two machines together (of course, i always win because I have a B&W with a 400Mhz G4 CPU 😛 )
we also load up Diablo II or StarCraft and play a few games between the who machine. I always lose at starcraft :'( .
He has turned into a mac addict, and despises his Compaq windows machine now. he now uses his new iMac G3 600 and his G3 Tower more than his Compaq. it's nice to feel I have converted someone 🙂

Good find!
I have never seen a G3 AIO in the flesh. Did they even ship in the UK? :?: not sure. this is the 2nd one i have owned. do u guys think the $30 i paid for it was too much? |
Posted by: Sludgedragon on 2007-07-21 23:10:12 $30.00 is not too much.
It was originally only sold to schools and I think it was all in one piece and therefore heavy because they didn't want the munchkins moving components around. Look at all the Performas and stuff like that that were all in one. And all the iMacs in schools. It's simpler to deal with and harder to casually mess around with.

Posted by: Bunsen on 2007-07-22 04:03:42 The very few I've seen on ebay.au usually state they are one of the only ones in the country, so they either didn't ship here and these were private imports, or they didn't sell many.

Posted by: LCGuy on 2007-07-22 15:17:27 From what i heard, Apple only sold them in the US and i think Canada. I'd imagine the few that are in AU would probably be imports, but i'm not too sad...although they are a great machine, they ARE bloody ugly! 😛

Posted by: MacMan on 2007-07-24 06:23:47 That makes sense. Most of the Mac-based schools in the UK went directly from 5xxx machines to iMacs in the late 1990's.

Posted by: macintoshman on 2007-07-24 09:21:16 And here in the US we went from iMacs to Hells err Dells 🙂
