A true liberation
Posted by: Patrickool93 on 2007-07-07 23:22:34
I accidently posted this in the Trading Post, I deleted that and put it in here...

I finally went to a local computer shop and got RAM for my iBook G3, which is running great now, btw...On my way out I noticed some old macs lying outside on the ground. Shocked, I went inside, and asked about them. They had been sitting outside for 2 years, there was a Multiple Scan 17, Centris 610 and a LC 475. I asked how much for the LC 475, and he said $5. I lied and said I said I had $3 on me and he took it. I took it home, and cleaned off 2 years of outside grime. I opened it, expecting hell, and to my surprise it was rust/corrosion free. Since it has not rained in over a week, I figured I would be OK to power up. I hooked it up, and turned it on. No video. A light went off in my head that said !!Pizza Box Power Toggle!! and, it booted, with video. As the extensions were loading, I was watching it. All of a sudden as an apperant speech extension loaded, a voice said "No thanks, I take it black, like my men." My friend was with me and she (and me) burst out laughing. I guess a file placed in the extension folder will play the file at startup...Anyway, I think it was a true liberation from an unloved enviroment.

Also, more macs at that shop include

2xGraphite G4's

3xApple monitors

Stylewriters

PM 7200

Centris 610

So a deserving iBook got ram and a LC 475 got a loving home.

All for 2 sticks of 256mb DDR2 memory from a MacBook and $3...

Worth it? I think so...

Truly a noble act of liberation, for which your name should be enrolled in some significant place. I have it! In the Macintosh 68K Liberation Army!

Nice. I just picked up a 475 myself. What is the "Pizza Box Power Toggle"? As far as I know the 475 needs a good pram battery to have video.

The toggle is leaving it on for about 5 seconds, then quickly "toggling" it to off then on. It leaves enough juice in the system for you to get video, and a working pizza box. Worked on my PM6100 too.

Nice job! And I would go back and snag at least the Centris 610.

Well, and probably the rest of them, too.

If he was keeping them outside all that time, I'd have made a midnight raid and grabbed them all for nothing. He probably would have been happy they were gone.

he wants them gone, Badly. But he also like money.A lot.

Get the 610! Get the 610! Pizza love!

Centris 610s aren't pizzaboxes I don't think....

I'd consider the 610 the very definition of a pizza box! The 605 is more like a box for an order of breadsticks... 🙂

Woah. Wait. Now that I am more awake, it sunk in - why haven't you grabbed yourself a deal on those G4s? Offer him like $40 for everything. Even if he has the G4s inside out of the rain, maybe he would let them go.

Can you post that extension somewhere that we can all download it? I'd love to get a copy of that...

Good find, by the way!

Peace,

Drew
