| Mac Os 8.1 on my IIci |

Greetings, (this is my first post on 68kmla)
I newly installed Mac Os 8 on my Mac IIci's 72gb external drive using resources patches and Wish i was(and not Born Again). Now it boots just fine and i find it significantly more stable than my old system 7.1 which was also somewhat stable.
But what satisfies me the most is the fact that now i can access HFS+ file system. So i partitioned this large drive to get a large 69gb HFS+ storage drive and a 1gb HFS drive to boot Mac Os 8.1. What i am wondering now is about enhancing the responsiveness of the computer and the UI's speed: Will replacing the RAM SIMMs (two 4mb and six 2mb - 20mb) by eight 16mb SIMMs to have 128mb of RAM will do so, and is it worth it?
I'm asking here for opinions because in the other hand -- if i don't get more ram, i would later (by the end of january) have the occasion to have a woking SE/30 or a Powerbook 150. I really am wondering what is the most worth it. I also put my IIci's configuration below:
-Cache card on;
-9gb Quantum internal drive w/ system 7.1 and 6.0.7 on it;
-72gb HP external drive in an Optimac box;
-20mb ram
-8°24 GC
-Asante ethernet card

20MB RAM is minimal for OS 8.1, I'd definately upgrade to 64MB RAM (128MB not necessary only if the RAM is cheap) and seek out an '040 accelerator for your Iici.

I think i'll do so. Not sure if i'd be able to find some accelerator card like a presto '040 but i'll keep looking for it!

I would concur with Byrd in more RAM and an accelerator. But 16Mg SIMMs is pretty cheap, you should be able to get it to 128MB with little problem. In fact, you should be able to do this for all your SE/30 as well. I do not know about the PB150, however, I think there is a limit as to how far it can go but if you can max it out it would be beneficial for it.
With the accelerator however, I have to caution you. Many people out there will sell you can accelerator pretty cheap (relatively speaking), but it has no software for it and each accelerator seem to have their own software for it, forcing you to hunt it down on the net. Some maybe easier to find than others. I'll make the hunt easier with this link, it has MOST (not all) of the known accelerators made for Mac: http://www.vintageapple.org/macdrivers/accel.shtml
You have a choice with accelerators - either a fast '030 or a '040 for the IIci. Since I have the DayStar '040 in my IIci, I'm partial to it. It fits into the Cache Card Slot nicely. It can be used with other Macs with an adapter. For the SE/30, I recommend the Diimo '030/50. It's small and fits inside the SE case. It also works on other Macs with an adapter. It will make the SE/30 a screaming wickedly fast Mac! But a '040 Accelerator will also need the '040 Cache Extension/Control Panel from Apple or the Accelerator maker. It turns on/off the two large caches inside the '040 as needed because many older programs crash under the '040 Cache and needs it off.

How did you get 8.1 on the IIci? Used "Born again" to get it to work? I would like details as to do the same on my machine(s) as well.

I didn't use Born again. I am currently searching for the guide i followed to get my IIci to boot on Mac Os 8.1 because i don't remember the website. As soon as i find it back (Not every website has the Wish I Was control panel download working) i'll post it here.

Software wise, replace Finder with the version from 7.5.x and remove Appearance Manager and other extensions - you keep HFS+ and friends, but have a lightweight system.

The Disk First Aid disks for 8.x used this configuration, so seemingly not.
