Wanted: Hard Drive WITH A FAN
Posted by: Scott Baret on 2007-06-19 12:36:42
I'm looking for a new hard drive for my iBook G4. I'd prefer one with a fan no matter how noisy it is because I'm so sick of the overheating of the hard drive that's in there. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

afaik...they don't exist. what, pray tell, are you doing which is causing the HD to overheat??

iMovie in particular seems to make it run too much, but almost anything from surfing the net to word processing seems to make that stupid drive run and get hot.

I just wish this was a computer I could actually put on my lap, like my old clamshell iBook G3 is. That computer doesn't get hot.

Isn't it more likely to be the CPU than the HD that is making it get hot when running apps like iMovie though?

Maybe you need an iBreeze or other laptop cooler with fans.

thats what i thought...HD's almost never overheat, i mean you'd have to REALLY use them for extremely long periods of time in a desert to get them to overheat, especially a slow laptop drive.

It probably is the CPU, I am just suspecting the hard drive because the left wrist pad is always hot and the drive seems to spin incessantly sometimes.

what, praytell is the revision of the G4? If it's the 1st revision (867,900,1Ghz) then it's most likely the actual GPU, since apple didn't switch the position of the GPU when they switched from the G3 (which is the reason why the beginning G4's had the same problem as the G3s)

My laptop get slightly warm at max on the HDD area, but not *too* warm. Even with the 5400RPM 120GB HDD in it. Runs just fine and cool compared to when I had my G3 that had the GPU there

Yeah, and the beginning G3s didn't use as much Watts as the beginning G4s did. Even my PowerBook Pismo 400Mhz didn't get that hot compared to a TiBook that I borrowed from a friend for a month. That thing scorched my lap and I am *still* wondering if i will have kids after that...

^ Me too. I usually put the thing on my knees or a table these days.

Bummer dude, now you're gonna have to have sex on a regular basis until you find out.
