Performa 400
Posted by: heebiejeebies on 2007-06-11 15:26:34
Good morning,

I am still looking for a colour machine that can run system 6. I've noticed that the Performa 400 is really an LC II wearing a false moustache. Apple's specs say that it cannot run system 6, but then it says that about the LCII as well (yet apparently that model can). I suppose they're exactly the same model, but the Performa 400 was released about a year after, in September '93 - I'd be somewhat surprised to find that a machine released that late still ran 6. Anyone happen to know before I buy it?

Thank you [8D]

To my knowledge, they have the exact same mobo, just set to a different Getstalt ID, so there's no reason that 6.0.8 shouldn't work on it, and even if it doesn't work, you can use a program like Wish I Were to change the Getstalt ID to that of an LCII, and it'll be a proper, ridgy-didge LCII.

Correction--the P400 was released in September 1992, not 1993.

Then Low End Mac is wrong. According to them, they were only sold for one month!

LEM (was it under DK's byline?) seems to have a grand contempt for the year portion of dates. The 512Ke had a brief career also, according to LEM.

I've seen A LOT of books, sites, etc. get the 512Ke wrong. It was discontinued in September 1987.

I finally received it this week. Strangely, just the fact that I was using an LCII with its impotent little startup chime and one of those 14" trinitrons really took me back. 14 years melted away. And it does run system 6 without needing Wish I Were, but for some reason, same as my SE/30, when you start up from floppy in 6, the hard disk doesn’t show up. Any ideas?

What system version do you have on the HD?

6 on the SE/30, 7.5 on the LCII.
