| Customizing the OS 9 boot screen? | |

| Posted by: olePigeon on 2014-12-18 09:39:27 You mean ResEdit. 🙂 If you put a .pict file named StartupScreen, it'll place a picture there during startup, but you won't see the progress bar, extension icons, etc.  You can also place StartupMovie in there with a QuickTime movie, which it'll play before it begins loading the OS. To change the picture of the actual startup screen, you'd need to open up the System Folder with ResEdit and then paste in your own picture.  Make sure you make a copy of your System Folder before you do this. | |

| Posted by: CC_333 on 2014-12-18 10:32:21 I once edited the OS 9.2.2 startup screen (via ResEdit, of course) to look like System 7.5.0 (the version immediately before the one where the now familiar Mac OS screen was introduced). It was quite neat, I thought, and it took a lot of trial and error, since I had to get it in just the right spot for it to look right. I probably still have that modified System file floating around here somewhere.... c | |
| Posted by: sega dude on 2014-12-18 16:21:08 I downloaded Resedit and managed to find the OS 9 boot screen in the System file. Is there a way to export it so I can find out what the dimensions of the image are? If there isn't a way to export it, does anyone know what size the image should be? | |

| Posted by: sega dude on 2014-12-18 18:26:10 I wasn't able to paste it into anything. I couldn't paste it into the Finder, Quicktime picture viewer or simple text. It's mostly a clean install of OS 9.1, I don't have much installed at the moment. | |

But depending on the resolution and color-bit depth on boot will depend on which one is loaded. I have a totally custom System 8 on my old G3-Wallstreet which was used as an experimental webserver years ago. Its StartUp Screen has Pai-Gon sitting on a monitor asking where the files are. I'm planning on making one for OS 9.0.x and OS 9.2.x as well. If anyone's intersted, I can upload the image here. I used the resedit method btw.  | |

For those of you that don't know, you must use the PICT format in Resedit, the png version won't work. I opened the PICT version in Quicktime picture viewer, copied it from there and pasted it into resedit. This was based on the image in -16506. Added the OS 9.2 version. Again, I included both png and PICT formats and it is based on the image in -16506. New OS 9 boot.zip New OS 9.2 boot.zip | |

The reason I put "Welcome to Macintosh" in the white box instead of just in the gray, is because I just resized the Mac OS 8 screen, used it's borders, and etc. and then pasted the picasso and the text into it. | |
