picked it up today. got it from a guy on ebay who said that he gives you 5 bucks when you come and pick it up...
it came with a nice apple 16" monitor and a personal laserwriter ntx, had the basic 250mb HD (with system 7.1.2p - never seen this one :?: ), 36mb RAM and PDS ethernet card.

Maybe eBay should offer negative starting prices to persuade people to take hard-to-shift items, ie someone lists their ancient Mac for, say -$50, meaning that they pay the winning bidder $50 to take it off their hands, but then if two or more people are interested then they bid against each other to get the Mac for less money ie the winning bid might only be -$10 if one of the bidders is willing to take it for just $10 payment. Then if it turns out that actually there's a lot of interest in it, the bidding can go up into positive figures where you have to pay the seller to get the item instead.

Well that's the idea - you pay someone $50 (or however much you want) to take something off your hands that you're keen to get rid of, like someone paid $5 to get rid of this Performa. If you offer something for free then people might not bother with the hassle of coming to get it and carry it home etc, but if you offer them some cash as an incentive, as well as the item, they are more likely to make the effort! In some places it costs money to dump such things, so you'd rather pay your "bidder" to take it away and put it to good use, rather than pay the local authority to do it and trash it.

That is quite good from the "buyer's" point of view!
I heard of a scrap yard somewhere near Glasgow that gave people £50 if they took old (but working) Volvo Estates away as they are very difficult to crush and dispose of. A friend of mine got a 1988 Volvo V240 Estate in good condition with working air conditioning and electric windows, and got paid £50 to take it!
This phenomenum seems to occur most with ungainly items like pianos, which are impossible to shift otherwise.

but form a seller standpoint its a loss might as wel chuck it then I think some would be prepared to pay someone to take something who is going to appreciate it, as opposed to chucking it away. Anyway, as I said in some areas I think you have to pay to dispose of things like computers that are considered to be environmental hazards.

A lot of people don't have space to keep lots of old machines around the place though - if they buy a new PC they want to get rid of the old one(s).
