| Question on buying Powerbooks |
Posted by: Maconthemove on 2007-05-17 20:08:49 In two weeks, about 15 100series Powerbooks anda few Duos in that figure will become available to me. The cost is $10.00CAD (about $9.00USD) each. The are fair to good shape. They have batteries but no ac power. For the price, is it worth getting?

Posted by: LCGuy on 2007-05-17 23:13:43 Grab 'em! By now most 1xx series PowerBooks have been thrashed like a stolen car, so if they're in good nick definately grab 'em. If you can find a good example they are nice machines...i have a mint condition PB180c here that i bought off bYrd a couple of years ago, and it is a wonderful machine.

I wouldn't get them all at that price, as that adds up to a huge amount - maybe take a look at them and just pick the one or two in the best condition.

A) if you're handy with a soldering iron, or you have a friend who is, then you can modify a PB to work with any 'standard' power supply.
B) at the very least you can rip out all the RAM, HD's, bezels, inverter boards and anything else useful and re-distribute - most likely making your money back (though you then have to get rid of the junk so please recycle or something)

Posted by: Flash! on 2007-05-18 05:59:15 oh yeah, and it's always a fun suprise seeing what you actually get. I got a "mixed bunch" of 500 series PB's once. One of them had a PPC board in it [😀] ]'> Out of 5 or 6 powerbooks I got 500PPC in excellent condition, and a 520c and 520 in pretty good condition - the rest was just junk.

Posted by: MacMan on 2007-05-18 06:16:10 It obviously depends where they're coming from, but you could see if you could do a deal for a discounted price if you take them all.

Posted by: Maconthemove on 2007-05-18 07:19:41 It is about a 5 minute drive, so there is no shipping costs. Going to buy them. They all work. Will keep some for spares, sell some and trade the rest.

that adds up to a huge amount I wouldn't call $150 to $200 a huge amount, when a single tested working PB100 in good nick with a PS will earn you that back in one sale ...

Seriously?! 8-o Anyway, for me that is still a huge amount where old Macs are concerned - I've never considered acquiring any Mac for anything other than free! 😛 If I did have $200 to spend on Macs then I would much rather have one iBook than an unlimited number of trashed 68k PBs with no adapters though. But maybe that's just me 🙂

Posted by: Quadraman on 2007-06-03 18:20:14 Get them all. That lot is worth it even if all you wanted to do was strip them for parts. You'd get a lot more than the asking price for them parting them out.
|
Posted by: Bunsen on 2007-06-03 19:06:11 Word. Build up a couple of working ones to suit your taste, and ebay all the parts. Question of space, time, and inclination, though.

Posted by: Maconthemove on 2007-06-03 20:21:32 I got what was left. He had sold eight to one guy. Picked up the last ten. Seven 100 series and three Duo 230's.
