Finally, a sensible attitude ...

I'm a huge fan of the Apple PLW320 and 4/600 printers. They still work great in Mac OS X, and you have software to use them in Linux. (Microsoft dropped LocalTalk support in Windows XP though.)

So I'm looking at the Ubuntu wiki to see how to setup the printer properly, since I usually use a half-fast approach to get things working. In the process I came across this rather sensible comment:

While the AppleTalk protocol suite is considered deprecated by Apple these days, the large number of legacy devices makes discarding the protocol unfeasible.
How often do you see that attitude in the computer industry? If only we saw it more often!

gee i dunno ? the pc is stil dragging around legacy ports like serial and parallel around and windows still supports it ? barley

True, I wasn't thinking of actual interfaces like RS-232 and parallel. I wonder if XP or Vista support ISA buses?

I can confirm that Windows XP definately supports ISA, i have it on an AMD K6/266 (Socket 7 mobo) and i have no problems using my ISA modem or my ISA sound card with it.

I don't think Vista supports ISA - I believe that is the reason why you can't get sound in MS Virtual PC with it, because VPC emulates an ISA sound card. To be honest I think it's unlikely that any machine with ISA slots will be able to run Vista anyway. Windows does support all the interfaces like parallel, serial, PS/2 etc though (though quite often there won't be Vista drivers for that ancient parallel printer 😛 )

dude...i'm so going to try to run vista on an isa mobo with an isa vga/sound/network/enet, EVERYTHING! or even better....e-isa!

😀
