I installed itunes 2 on my performa 6200, but when I try to play an mp3 or any file even a CD, itunes crashes and quits... I have 48mb RAM, OS 9.1, 20gb HD. I know this computer has a ppc 603 75mhz processor.... What could be causing itunes to not work?

Are there any extension conflicts? Try unisntalling and reinstalling iTunes. I had to do that on my 6500 when I installed iTunes 2.

iTunes is not compatible with the sound hardware on the 6200 series. It seems to require a PCI-type Mac such as the 8500. I think you can run SoundJam MP which might be a suitable replacement.

I coulda sworn that the x200 series of machines were PCI?

EDIT: In fact, i thought ALL 603/e/ev systems were PCI?

I've run iTunes 1.1 hacked with 8.6 on a (Nubus based) Powerbook 1400 with VM turned off. AFAIK the hack is only needed for pre-OS 9, so if you can find iTunes 1.1 give that a go.

No, these machines used Comm slots and LC PDS slots. PCI wasn't in the 5xxx/6xxx until the 6360.

Just use Audion instead. Much less heavy, and it's freeware now. Other lighter MP3 players are reviewed here:

Some of the players mentioned can be hard to find.

The 5200/6200-series machines and PowerBooks 5300 and 1400 are NuBus, and the 5200/6200 machines are very poorly engineered examples of it. Like others have said, iTunes won't really work on non-PCI boxes (at least it doesn't for me). I use WinAmp Mac (don't know if that's downloadable anymore) or MpegDec (available here: http://www.jwgdesign.com/mpegdec/about.htm). WinAmp works on PPC machines, and MpegDec works on '030s and up, though anything less than a 40MHz full '040 doesn't sound the greatest. It's decent on a 6100, though. If you're looking for an encoder, though, I don't know where one might find something decent. Given the speed of the machine you're trying to run it on anyway, I imagine that encoding would be painfully slow. My 6100 running MusicMatch Jukebox back in 2002 took the better part of an hour to encode 45 minutes worth of music at marginal quality.
