512k mouse == pc serial mouse?
Posted by: jefframsey on 2017-11-15 09:47:39
Just like the topic says: I have a db9 serial mouse from a PC. Will it work on a 512k compact Mac?

no it wont, changing pins wont do! This modification takes a lot of work.

A much simpler option is to make an Amiga mouse into a Mac one. http://blog.rekawek.eu/2016/12/08/mac-plus/

Apparently Atari mice can also be converted into Amiga mice and vice versa, so maybe you can combine those instructions with http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=739

Alas, Atari and Amiga mice not being any more common than Mac mice (at least most places in the world) renders that not much more helpful.

There are various microcontroller-based options for adapting standard PS/2 mice to the proper protocol. Here's a project page about building one and here's another. (If you search the forums here you may be able to find some other links to people selling assembled boards.)

Note/Warning: This (off-site) page contains useful technical information but also has a "joke" in it that could be offensive to some viewers.

I've seen that page before, and every time I do I wonder if the random anti-Semitic jab is just a standard thing in Poland, or what.
😵

But I mean, have you seen what is going on in Poland right now?

Alas, yes. Sigh. I guess I probably shouldn't have mentioned it, given it's treading dangerously close to the whole "politics" thing; it's just so jarring and random and out of context in a page about tinkering with old mice.

(The nicest possible interpretation I can come up with is that it's a badly unfunny joke referencing the analog-digital TV transition or something. There were some really strange conspiracy theories about that floating around at the turn of the century about the FCC... but, no, still not funny.)

Can you elaborate on that? I can see no connection between this site and antisemitism. If you're referring to recent Warsaw incident blown out proportion by some news stations, I think that's not the right place to discuss it. If I were rude I could ask you a question - is children sexual abuse just a random act of violence in your community, or just "standard thing" to you people?

There are many types of computer mice. But all computer mice types can be divided to three categories:
  •  Mice with analog output - the most known analog-output mouse was the mouse in Engelbart's NLS (oN Line System) shown in December 1968. They're not used  since 1970's, when jews from FCC forced manufaturers to buy more chips and to make transferred signals digital.
Here is what is antisemetic.

Ok sorry, missed that.

It took me reading it twice to notice that.

Oh my! I skimmed over that both times I read the page and was just going to post a "can someone please point out the offensive line..." type of post. I wonder why the author thought it necessary to include that kind of detail? Some people always point out the differences and negative things in everything they encounter...  > 🙁

Again, I probably should not have mentioned it, and I'm sorry, given apparently everyone else managed to filter it out and would have been perfectly happy to have never known it was there. It just sticks out to me like a sore thumb. A *very* sore and disquieting thumb.

And, re this:

or just "standard thing" to you people?
I apologize to anyone from Poland who may have been offended. That was me struggling with trying to comprehend why such a thing was just randomly thrown in there, the underlying thought being that perhaps "jokes" like that aren't considered offensive to community standards to the level they are in the US. My wording choice was extremely poor, and I have changed it to a simple warning that the page contains content that may be considered offensive.

Seriously, I genuinely hope the author of the page really was just trying to be "funny" and completely blew it.

Even if he was trying to be funny, anyone who thinks something like that is funny has to be pretty anti-Semitic.

There is this school of comedy where people think it's funny to say racist/sexist/whatever things ironically because it's totally obvious they're really not, swearsies, and are just making fun of people who actually are or whatever... but, yeah. Enough said. More than enough.

At this point if anyone has more to add about mouse replacement alternatives for non-ADB classic Macintoshes it would probably be best to try to swing the discussion back in that direction.

You can buy brand new Amiga mice for less than the cost of a Mac DE-9 mouse from AmigaKit and modify that if you don't mind it being a modern styled mouse and a tad gaudy.

CharlieFrown, I think this is a good spot to mention the modified mice you are selling that are suitable for use with a Mac 512k.  OP may have missed that post.
