need Sonnet Presto PPC Mac OS 8.5/8.6 Enabler software

Hi, I need Sonnet Presto PPC Mac OS 8.5/8.6 Enabler software. I don't have the card, it's for an investigation of how to make a system enabler myself.

Have you tried www.archive.org?

Do a search for www.sonnettech.com and look around the late 1990s.

There should be downloadable drivers there.

I'd include a link but archive.org is blocked at work.

As far as I can tell (even in 2001), it was never on their website at all, only on a floppy that came with the card.

If I ask about something here, it means I've already checked archive.org 😛

Fair enough, sorry to have impuned your integrity.

Have you tried sending Sonnet an e-mail?

A helpful fellow in Support was able to send me the wiring diagram for the power cable of the Sonnet Encore/ZIF.

I just did. Thanks.

Rumor on the street is the Sonnet card is just a relabeled Daystar board. Drivers for that are here:

It doesn't support 8.5/8.6, Sonnet made that themselves.

Nope, Sonnet bundled it with their own Software that is not among those downloads.

The old Sonnet site on archive.org explicitly says that the enabler is not available for download but you will receive it on Floppy bundled with an accelerator you buy from them. That is why it is probably not easily found on any of the manufacturer driver archives.

Note that Sonnet's software was never free, they charged $50 for it unless it came bundled with the card. (They offered it to Daystar Turbo 601 customers ala carte.)

Here's a page that claims it's possible to get 8.5 to work without the enabler by mucking with ResEdit. Presumably that's all Sonnet's software (effectively) does?

I am aware of exactly that page.

I might as well explain what I am trying to do:

I am trying to create a drop-in enabler that gets 8.5+ to work on PowerPC upgraded PowerBook 5xx, without needing to use ResEdit. That's why I want to see how their enabler works.

I wish I could edit my own posts. I think I've found what I was looking for in the "Minimal 5300/2300/190 Enabler" from the 7.5.2 Disk Tools.

If that works, well done, an answer has been reached.

If not, have you tried the generic Sonnet extension that is used for their upgrade cards?

I do not need that, I was just looking for information on the structure of system enablers. I have enough now to create a PowerBook 5xx PPC Enabler.

Every post of yours you’ve shot everyone down, parrotgeek 🙂

Considering you are asking for help has it occurred to you that you sound like an ungrateful git - why bother asking if you seemingly know it all?

I'm not trying to be like that. I should be clearer. From the replies it seems like I'm not going to be able to get their enabler because it cost money. When I realized that, I started to research the format of system enablers myself. I know I could have phrased some of these replies better, sorry.

And I shouldn't have called you a git, sorry 🙂

What's the plan with your enabler?  Is OS 8.5 usable on a PPC PB500?  I've a Newertech 167Mhz PB540c that seems quite happy with OS 8.1; it has the original Apple SCSI to IDE adapter sled in it.  Put a 16GB CF card and it's been fine, filled up with MP3s.

It is in fact usable. So is 8.6 when some extensions are trimmed down

I've gotten 9.0.4 to work and am working on 9.1 (it performs like crap! Don't actually do it)
