Macintosh Plus sound only with headphones
Posted by: Jon183 on 2017-08-26 23:08:15
Hi everyone,

I have a Macintosh Plus that was recently recaped and will only chime though headphones and not through the speaker, if the speaker is the issue, what replacement part(s) would I need?

Check the headphone jack.  There's a mechanical (springy metal bit) switch inside the jack that signals to disable the speaker when the headphone is plugged in.  Most likely, that springy metal isn't springing any more and is leaving the speaker permanently disconnected.   If you can hunt up a schematic, you can probably identify a couple of pins on the jack that you could short to see if that reenables the speaker.   Might also be in "The Dead Mac Scrolls".

I will have a look at the headphone jack once I get back

I also believe the pop noises the computer makes when i turn it on may be the speaker trying to output a chime due to the fact that they are at the same time and go for the same amount of time as a chime would, also sounds like a blown speaker.

My system disk and a mountain of other ones should come arrive Friday so I can test by playing sounds on the OS.

Check the connection to the board? It's very easy to forget to connect the speaker wire to the MoBo header or knock it loose during re-assembly..

The Speaker in connected to the Analog Board in The Plus, not the Logic Board, unlike the SE and SE/30.

Oopsie! It's been a while. It's still a connection to be checked as the first step in troubleshooting, I'd do the same in an auto-connection interfaced setup.
