AllMacs re-cap service on eBay - experiences?
Posted by: ben68 on 2017-08-25 07:55:32
As much as I'd like to re-cap my own board, I'm leaning toward having someone else do it - in case it needs more than just a re-cap.

Has anyone had experience with AllMacs on eBay?

"guaranteed to work"

And which one of you is this? 😉

Well, it's not Uniserver, so that's a point in their favor already. Their feedback is fine, the negatives look like just idiot buyers that didn't understand the seller's terms.

He's only a 2 hour drive from me so I'd kinda like to know as well. I have about 5 boards that need recapping.

Eh? His forum shenanigans aside, my experience with his recapping service was perfectly satisfactory and I'd ring him up again in a heartbeat if I had need of it.

Ditto, I've sent a whole lot of boards to uniserver and never had an issue with any of them.

There have been plenty of instances where he's wrecked boards.

Plus, do you really want to deal with someone who sells a machine like this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Macintosh-IIsi-/182727721026?hash=item2a8b6bc042:g:6O4AAOSwohdZnBko

Just making a very quick search I found only one instance and it sounds like the board had issues that a recap alone wouldn't fix.  I've been very happy with the work he's done for me and from his feedback thread it looks like the same can be said for a lot of folks.

Back to the OP's question though, it sounds like no one here has used that individual yet.  If they're willing to guarantee that the board will work after they're done with it then it might be worth taking a chance.

The photo on the AllMacs ebay listing shows that they used through-hole capacitors. Not a good sign, IMO.

I asked the seller, and he said he'd use tantalum if that's my preference.

People need to understand that even with recaps some boards are toast.
