| Macintosh ED DOVE enhanced | |
| Posted by: mactjaap on 2017-08-15 03:27:43 Another conquest. A Macintosh ED. Sold as not working. Picked it up for 30 euro (around US $35,- ) What did I learn from this sale. 1) If sold as not working it will probably don't work...... So what did I do. In a hurry to test I decied to test it at my mothers house who I was visiting. So I power it up and heared the monitor. Then the light went out. All of them. So it was not only not working but also giving a short circuit. We had to find the place where we could enable the fuses agian with the light of my iPhone. What to do after that. Yes I did brought my 15" Tork. I had it in the car, just in case.Opend it up and looked insight. And this is the inside. Not strange that it was not working. So lesson number 2. 2) Open up the case first and do a visual inspection. It is although an nice machine. A plaquete with DOVE enhanced is place on it. The SCSI cable is made in the battery compartment (battery is still in place....removed it right away of cource). Here are the pictures.            | |

When I tried to put it on it short circuited.[/SIZE] [SIZE=10.5pt]But I have some good news:[/SIZE] [SIZE=10.5pt]-      [/SIZE]Internal drive is working after cleaning and lubrication. (Bonus is that the external A9M0106 floppy drive is also working fine.) [SIZE=10.5pt]-    I removed the DOVE Snap on and t[/SIZE]he 512K motherboard is working, I put it on an other Plus chassis and analog board. [SIZE=10.5pt]   [/SIZE] But…. the DOVE snap on not. It will give an Sad Mac error 022000. And of cource the analog board has this exploded cap. | |
| Posted by: mactjaap on 2017-08-19 07:36:18 I cleaned the motherboard and soaked the DOVE MacSnap in cleaning vinigar for 24 hours. Brused it lightly with a toothbrush. On my donor test machine I now get a question mark! Thats is progress!! The image is less nice as I would like and some pixels are missing. But when I attach a drive ( extrenal or internal) It boots but immediatly reboots agian. Anyone with an idea what is wrong? See YouTube movie: https://youtu.be/Uvwkr1IoFoI | |

| Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2017-08-25 08:34:53 Vinegar it is acetic acid and water. So if the cap goo you're trying to remove is acidic, vinegar won't be the cleaning agent to do it. You need a base solution to deactivate acid. Wait until others chime in as to whether a baking soda solution would be harmful to electronics. There won't be enough acid to turn a board into a bottle rocket, but the carbon dioxide rocket exhaust ought to help in "blasting away" goo deposits under components.. [}🙂] ]'> edit: I've often wondered if running a dishwasher with baking soda as the "detergent" and then rinsing with a water only cycle might be the best way to clean cap goo from boards? | |
| Posted by: mactjaap on 2017-08-25 08:43:52 It is not goo I'm fighting but corrosion on the DOVE Snap board. It think this worked sort of but still a RAM problem. For now I'm working on my analog board. Simple replacement of two caps didn't help as you can see. Ticking sound and a short circuit:-( | |
| Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2017-08-25 09:15:14 If rust is your problem the phosphoric acid in soldering flux might be your best bet. It's the active ingredient in naval jelly rust remover. I wonder if dissolving naval jelly in water will work? Straight phosphoric acid is used as a food additive, so running it in a dishwasher as the detergent should be fine. Running the dishwasher with baking powder "detergent" afterward would clean it out nicely and make it smell fresh too! 😀 I think I'll start a technically oriented board cleaning thread. | |
