| Macintosh SE/30 list of capacitors |
Posted by: Alex on 2017-08-13 04:57:28 Hello
I am going to be reworking the logic board on an SE/30 and am looking for a list of capacitors for the board.
The board I have has already gone through a repair by an unknown third party and I intend to remove all the caps he put in place.
I would like to install the original electrolytic capacitors and other caps that the board hosted. I don't want to go with tantalum capacitors because of their very disruptive end of life characteristics, namely they can blow up.
I would appreciate if someone in the know could provide me a list of caps and their respective locations.
Kindest regards
—Alex

Posted by: reallyrandy on 2017-08-13 13:39:13 Someone used to sell kits but no longer. I would buy one too. I need to recap 2 IIcis, a IIsi, an SE/30 and a Plus. I also need to fix a power board on a Jasmine 20MB Direct Drive.

Here's a list:
http://www.maccaps.com/MacCaps/Capacitor_Reference/Entries/1989/1/19_Macintosh_SE_30.html Are these correct? Please help me a little further.
I found the following on mouser.com. Could I please ask you if the choices made via the links pasted are indeed the correct items? What about brands? Which are the best? There is Nichicon, Vishay, Lelon, Cornell, any advice on brand reputation?
10 - 47µf - 16V - SMT

1 - 220µf - 16V - Axial
(mouser mentions ripple currents of 210, 260 and 298 mA) - which is recommended?

1 - 1µf - 50V - SMT
(I don't know which to choose)

Posted by: ben68 on 2017-08-13 16:25:48 My understanding is that tantalum is a better choice. They last longer than you'll need them to, and they are about as easy to install. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here - this is just what I've read.

Posted by: aplmak on 2017-08-13 19:03:15 I only do tantalum replacement when possible.. and I stay away from SMD cans...

Posted by: ben68 on 2017-08-13 21:21:46 I, too, would like a definitive link for the caps to use, since I'm a novice soldering iron slinger. There are so many capacitors to choose from, even among similar ones.
I also buy from arrow.com, so the tantalums that I referred to above are these at Arrow.

Isn't someone here selling a kit with all the necessary capacitors for ten bucks? I still do that. I don't know why your respondent claims I don't. Please see the stickied thread in Trading Post.

Posted by: ben68 on 2017-08-14 08:08:44 Thanks, trag! When I'm ready to do it, I'll buy from you. Does your kit include tantalums?

I wasn't aware there was another source. I would also just rather buy kits so I didn't have to figure out what I need. Apologies.

Posted by: Scott Squires on 2017-08-14 15:52:46 I maintain a list of replacement capacitors at https://www.hobbesnet.org/wiki/macintosh:logic-board-capacitors. I have links to specific part numbers I use. I only have part numbers for aluminum electrolytic and aluminum polymer. These are more difficult to solder than tantalum (mainly due to the very small leads). I haven't been convinced that tantalum are better for this purpose. Ease of soldering might ultimately be a big enough factor to tip the scales in my mind. For now I'm sticking with polymer though. Some day I will figure out the best sizes for tantalum replacement parts for comprehensiveness.

Posted by: powermax on 2017-08-14 16:51:38 IIRC, tantalum caps need to be properly derated, i.e. a 47µf, 16V need to be replaced with a 47µf, 35V tantalum cap. For further details, see this thread.

Posted by: Alex on 2017-08-15 06:38:46 I hope this helps for those interested in tantalum replacements:

…and after googling around, I found this https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/topic/15517-fs-tantalum-rework-capacitors-for-those-old-boards-10set/

I maintain a list of replacement capacitors at https://www.hobbesnet.org/wiki/macintosh:logic-board-capacitors. Thank you very much for posting your list of parts linking to Mouser.com.

Thanks, trag! When I'm ready to do it, I'll buy from you. Does your kit include tantalums? Yes, I only use tantalums, except for the Axials, of course. But all the Surface Mount Electrolytic cans are replaced with tantalums.
