| Main Theme for Apeiron by Ambrosia Software? |
Posted by: fyndr on 2017-07-08 15:05:35 I was wondering if anyone might know this offhand. There's a sample of music at the beginning of Apeiron that goes like this (note timestamp - about 5 seconds in)
The theme is only ten or so seconds long, but it sounds like it may be part of a longer composition. Alternatively, it could have been sampled from an actual song and then digitized/remixed accordingly.
Does anyone know where to find the full version of either the Apeiron theme or the song that it's based on? I know that this sort of thing has come up before in classic Mac circles - for example the old version of Diamonds has a theme based on "Let's All Chant" by the Michael Zager band, while the new version uses "I've Been Thinking About You" by London Beat. Any ideas?
(Also note the video contains the OS X version of Apeiron, but the same music is used on the classic Mac OS version as well)

Posted by: blitter on 2017-07-08 21:55:12 Ambrosia got the themes for Escape Velocity (Face of the Enemy) and EV Override (Larry's Orchestral Adventure) from Killer Tracks. Since EV was released a year after Apeiron, it's possible they had a relationship with KT by then, so I would start looking there. 🙂

Posted by: fyndr on 2017-07-09 09:27:26 Thanks, I think that's the right way to go! I still have to check further but in the interim I found the stage theme for Apeiron here (titled "Big Bugs"):Â http://www.killertracks.com/#!/browse/browsed-results.aspx?selectedLabelId=8&PageNo=4&SelectedCDId=574
Will post again once I find the title theme.

Posted by: fyndr on 2017-07-09 11:15:19 After some digging I determined I was looking in the wrong area, thought it was something like Sci-Fi or Fantasy but it turned out to be Broadcast News/Promo 😛
http://www.killertracks.com/#!/browse/browsed-results.aspx?selectedLabelId=8&PageNo=4&SelectedCDId=562
The actual name of the track is "Acid Test".
I suppose that answers my question so the thread can be closed, unless anyone wants to discuss music or soundtracks in other Mac games from this era?

Posted by: Innes on 2017-07-10 07:20:40 Imma guess that this is where the background theme of Barrack came from as well. Always wondered if there was a longer version out there, but how do you find a needle in a haystack?

Posted by: fyndr on 2017-07-10 15:03:39 Do what I did, start from the bottom of http://www.killertracks.com/#!/browse.aspx?selectedLabelId=8&PageNo=4and work your way backwards 😛
Given that these games are from the early to mid 90s and Killer Tracks was incorporated in 1989, most likely the relevant tracks are in one of the albums on that page. I might check it out for a lark later but I have to work on some other things first.

Posted by: fyndr on 2017-07-10 17:26:40 I went through the full page of results and found the following:
Apeiron bonus sound - "Psyched Up": http://www.killertracks.com/#!/browse/browsed-results.aspx?selectedLabelId=8&PageNo=4&SelectedCDId=3773
Apeiron game over theme - "Ma Yu Ra Pi Rom":Â http://www.killertracks.com/#!/browse/browsed-results.aspx?selectedLabelId=8&PageNo=4&SelectedCDId=615
Also unrelated, but if you're familiar with the comedy group Stella (Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and David Wain) their intro theme is "This One's Fun!" under http://www.killertracks.com/#!/browse/browsed-results.aspx?selectedLabelId=8&PageNo=4&SelectedCDId=607
I'll try checking other likely candidates later on.

Posted by: fyndr on 2017-07-10 18:49:09 All right I finished going through all the albums that were from the time period that Ambrosia was developing these games. I was able to find the following:
Barrack title theme - "Heat":Â http://www.killertracks.com/#!/browse/browsed-results.aspx?selectedLabelId=8&PageNo=3&SelectedCDId=630
Â
Barrack game over theme - "Shoot the Moon":Â http://www.killertracks.com/#!/browse/browsed-results.aspx?selectedLabelId=8&PageNo=3&SelectedCDId=630
Â
And now I'm spent 😛 |
Posted by: fyndr on 2017-08-27 12:42:27 On the topic of classic Mac game sound effects and music, I noticed that the New Order song "Confusion" contains a laugh at the end of the track that is the source for the sound that plays in Solarian II when you shoot a score multiplier:
If the timestamp in the URL doesn't work, skip to 4:38 in the video.
