| SuperMac Thunder II - Any Info? |
Posted by: retrotech42 on 2017-06-20 21:12:21 I found this video card in a Quadra 950 I picked up. I can't really find anything about it online, but from what I've heard it's a pretty high end card. Does anyone have any extra info?

It is not the most powerful NuBus graphics card. It is not accelerated for QuickDraw operations but it is a grand card for day-to-day game-playing. It works reasonably well with an 1280x1024 LCD monitor, depending on your monitor, of course.

The GX means it has the DSP board attached.
3 different models were made, the best one has 13w3 connector instead of mac DB-15.
Very nice card, I have one.

Posted by: retrotech42 on 2017-06-21 13:59:57 Thanks for all the info! Copyright dates on the ROM and PCB are both '93. I'm having problems getting the Quadra itself to display any video through either the card or the built in video port. I've tried two monitors (Macintosh Color Display and generic Dell VGA) but still no video. The rest of the startup process seems to go well, but there's no chime.

Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2017-06-21 14:25:01 A quick look at the gamba2 matrix indicates 1024 x 768 is you best shot, looks like it's the only 60Hz resolution listed for your card. 1993 was iffy for VGA resolutions in the Mac world. 60hz VGA was like Windows of the era, bad enough it might make you wanna throw up if you knew any different, but just good enough to take over the world so most folks never got a taste of the good stuff.

Posted by: olePigeon on 2017-06-21 15:13:55 I think if you hold down the Spacebar while it boots, the card will cycle through resolutions and refresh rates. At least, I think it's spacebar.
I have one, and it went all the way to 1600x1200 resolution. I stopped using it because it didn't support the 4-bit color mode I needed for many of my games. 🙁
