| Have you used "Born Again"? software? |
Posted by: mraroid on 2017-06-14 19:24:40 Hi..
I am running 7.6.1 on a 68030 Color Classic II computer. I just down loaded "Born Again" version 1.0. It is suppose to let me install 8.0 or 8.1 on a partition on my hard drive. Has anyone here used it? Do you have anything good or bad to say about it? I am going to guess that it will slow down 8.1...
Feedback welcome.
Thanks

Posted by: maceffects on 2017-06-14 22:57:45 I know the rule on this forum is that sometimes it's good to do something just because it can be done. That said, I really don't think I would try to run OS 8 on the stock 16mhz 68030, coupled with the ram limit it would make this machine unbearably slow.

Posted by: mraroid on 2017-06-15 04:50:06 OK. That is what I wanted to know. I found a 128MB SIM that is suppose to fit the 575 board. Maybe after I do a upgrade to a real 68040 I will look at 8.1 again. But I think I will pass for now.
Thanks!

I think mac effects is thinking about the orginal CC

Posted by: ArmorAlley on 2017-06-15 06:22:57 I used it on my Mac IIfx in order to install Mac OS 8.1, which, I must say, runs it quite well and it is nice to be able to give my IIfx access to HFS+ volumes.

Posted by: rsolberg on 2017-06-15 15:16:20 Do note that Mac OS 8.1 does not require a full 68040. A 68LC040 (as included with the 575) will run Mac OS 8.1 just as well as a full 68040. The OS and included applications don't take advantage of the floating point unit in the full '040, only certain application software does.
As for 8.1 on '030 systems: it does seem usable on the faster clocked '030s with ample amounts of RAM. 33MHz and more than 32MB of RAM seemed to run it fine. 7.6.1 will seem lighter on the same hardware though.

Posted by: mraroid on 2017-06-16 06:16:37 I am waiting for my resistors from Mouser to arrive. Then I will will do the mod on my 575 board and see if it works in my CC. Maybe I will hold off on Born Again until I can install it under a real 68040. I can swap out the 68LC040 for a full 68040 right? It is just plug and play right? I bought a full 68040 a couple of years ago for this poroject.

Posted by: rsolberg on 2017-06-16 08:18:52 Born Again is for '030 Macs. '040 Macs are officially supported by Mac OS 8.0/8.1, so Born Again serves no purpose on them.

Posted by: mraroid on 2017-06-16 09:50:03 Sorry I was not clear (more coffee, more sleep??). Yea, I will just install OS 8 with out Born Again if I can get my 575 logic board to work in my CC.
