Help me clean my analog board (distilled water & ??)
Posted by: mraroid on 2017-06-01 14:18:35
I would like to clean (at least the underside) of the analog board of my Color Classic.

I am unsure of the correct chemicals to use.  I am in Ecuador, so name brand cleaners are probably not available to me.  I have access to distilled water.  I can buy common chemicals (vinegar?) and some common types of cleaning liquids.

I searched the forums here and found a *huge* variety of things that people use.  Perhaps someone could post maybe the top three things to try?

I was thinking distilled water and a soft toothbrush to start. I have access to isopropyl alcohol but it is only 70% (it was over 90% in the USA).  I have access to vinegar.  We have a "409" knock off here in Ecuador.

On another web site, I saw a suggestion of using heat gun (I have a good one) to re flow the solder on old apple logic and analog boards.  I don't think i want to do that.  But cleaning - yea, I am up for it. Maybe no liquid but just a soft brush?

Suggestions welcome.

Thanks

The 70% alcohol should be okay, HOWEVER PLEASE dry out your board by hand! It will not dry as fast and will rust....

Air compressor?

Thanks Johnnya.... I do have some cans of compressed air that I can use.  Then leave it overnight to dry out??

Cans of compressed air are expensive, and usually don't have enough air.

Got clothes dryer that runs on very low heat? Try that, I've dried more than a few boards in my dryer. (Of note: I have a stationary drying rack, so the board sits on that in the middle-ish of the drum)

Clean with the 70% IPA, rinse with distilled, dry.

Go to a local pharmacy and ask for medical Isopropyl alcohol. That's 99.9% pure and at least here it's very cheap. Pharmacy's use it for making creams/ointment.
