| Mac OS 9 compatibility |
Posted by: winterlight on 2017-05-26 11:14:52 Hi guys,
I just bought a Power Mac G4 which according to wikipedia can use the universal install of Mac OS 9.2.2 -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_9#endnote_A1
(I have the PowerMac G4 (quicksilver))
I installed the OS fine but once the installed OS boots it freezes.
It seems like this is because the OS is not actually compatible with the hardware.
According to the page below even universal install images have a special procedure to install as a universal install (which is totally confusing to me)
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/936301?tstart=0
I downloaded the image from here
https://www.macintoshrepository.org/126-mac-os-9-2-2-universal-2013-edition-
Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? If I need a machine specific version does anyone know where I can find a Mac OS 9 image for a Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver) [not the 2002]?
Thanks again for your help guys.

Posted by: Macdrone on 2017-05-26 13:49:46 My quicksilver is acting odd and not booting as of this last week into 9 or X of any flavor. I have not messed with it much but yes the 9.2.2 should work just fine in it. Mine had worked fine until it sat. I did try the cuda switch, remove cards and extra ram, no change. Got one kernel panic, changed to another processor I had same thing. I am unsure why. I would hate to think caps, but the longer it was plugged in the less it happened. If its caps there are a bunch on that motherboard.

There are plenty of copies available on eBay for cheap. If all else fails, I'd be much more confident in this image than that one. https://winworldpc.com/download/3E3DC7CB-18DA-11E4-99E5-7054D21A8599

I will add that I've used the QS2002 9.2.2 disk on every preceeding AGP G4 and it has always worked fine for me. I generally grab it for all of those computers as it saves the upgrade dance to get to 9.2.2.

I'd reccomend finding the correct restore disk like others mentioned.
