Identify the IIsi RAM?
Posted by: l008com on 2017-04-25 05:00:14
So I have this Mac IIsi that won't power on. Completely dead. I assume it needs a power supply. There's not much inside this thing to salvage. Given the limited number of components, I'm assuming the 4 chips in brackets below are the RAM right?

Assuming they way, is it possible to determine the capacity of each chip from whats printed on them?

I'm seeing something cylindrical AND RED. My eyes hurt. This has to go ASAP.  😛

You're lucky there's anything to salvage.

Those are indeed RAM SIMMs. These SIMMs with the two chips won't work on older Macs. IIRC only the Classic II and up can use these (some are compatible with the SE etc.. but most of them aren't).

Can't really tell you what they are though, not good enough I'm afraid.

Ahhhhh the bomb!

Well at least it hasn't gone off?

*BOOM*

As stated get that thing out now.

The Power supply is easy to repair, a couple of caps, almost everything is present except for the hard drive.

The IIsi is a nice machine, and yes, the red maxell has not exploded yet, so lucky one.

Ram could be 4 Mb for each stick, but to be confirmed.

I looked that RAM IC up; looks to be "4M x 4-bit". So; each chip is 4mbits then I think; which means that you have 1MB each on those sticks, I think.

If the chips are 4M X 4 bits then they are 16 Mbits per chip and 32 Mbits per SIMM. Which would yield 4 MB per SIMM.

Thanks trag for the information. You are indeed correct, I was wrong. At least I figured out there were 4M x 4-bit.

You did the hard part, looking up the chip specs.

Well, before its off to the recycler, anyone want to purchase this ram (will ship) or grab the broken IIsi for free (will not ship)? Otherwise it's off to ebay with this memory.

I'd be interested in the ram depending on price. I really beg you to list it on eBay... these things have not had new replacement parts for a long time. I might be able to get it if you don't want to list it this weekend.

Yeah I'd actually like the whole thing. If it's just a few caps to bring it back to life... Even if it can't be brought back to life the logic board is still good probably.

I'm getting mixed messages. If I list it on ebay, you're not going to get it (most likely)

Well I'm saying if you do want to list it, go right ahead and you can make a quick few bucks. If not I can probably pick it up and fix it.

Are you talking about the computer or the RAM? I'm definitely not listing the computer (although someone on the forum may be coming to get it today).

Yes, I'm talking the whole computer. Let the person who would be going already get it and I'll take the ram (depending on price)! How much?
