Hi all.
I'm trying to email the old owner of my G4 their old files...
Anyways. When I have this plugged into my Ethernet adapter, and go on safari or Firefox, the entire thing locks up and gets a spinning wheel. I have to restart it. I have also tried plugging in Ethernet after I'm in a browser, but as soon as I enter the address, first brings me to my power line page, then freezes when I click take me to the internet. I have already repaired permissions and made a new user to test it. Freezes every time. All lights are green in settings for internet.
Ideas?

what OS? Try putting files on a cd and putting in another computer.

It could potentially be the RAM, as it happens just as you are running programs that would address further RAM.
Otherwise, it probably needs a fresh OS for that kind of problem. I'd put the files on a CD or USB drive as already mentioned, and reinstall the OS.

Yeah I really want to re install as it's getting bogged down with everything.
Ok then I'll get a flash drive and transfer between it and my MacBook. Then I'll see f a reinstall works.
It's running OS X 10.4 and also OS 9. I'm not sure if the internet works in OS 9 because I could not find a browser! I know the power line works though because after that I set up my G3 and was on the web.

Ok so I got classilla installed on the OS 9 side and it works perfectly... I also managed to load apples website on the OS X side too but everything after that would just not load.

Ethernet-over-power adapters can be finicky. The best way to begin troubleshooting a network issue is to do a series of ping tests. The command on OS X terminal is 'ping x.x.x.x' where each 'x' is the IP address of the device you're trying to verify connection to. If your default gateway IP (your home router) is 192.168.0.1, then you would type 'ping 192.168.0.1'. This will happen continually until you hit CTRL-C. Look to see if there are any dropped packets between your computer and the router. If so, the issue is either a bad ethernet cable, bad NIC (ethernet port on Mac), faulty ethernet-over-power adapter, or the wiring in your home has too much noise for the EOP adapters to work properly. If you cannot successfully ping at all, you may have faulty hardware, or improperly configured addressing. If you're not using DHCP on the Mac, make sure you're using an IP on the same subnet as your router, and that it's not used by any other device.

Ah. If the powerline adapter is redirecting initial web traffic to its own landing page, said page might have a component on it (Flash, Java, JavaScript, etc.) that's not properly supported in the very old version of Firefox (≤3.6), Safari, or perhaps Flash Player or JRE installed on that machine. Classilla may behave differently because it has a more modern JavaScript implementation, or because it has plugins disabled. (in the case of Flash or Java) You could use Classilla to download TenFourFox and see if that behaves differently. When it freezes, is it a hard lock up, or can you still move the mouse cursor?

I'm not getting any more of the power line config page, just the pages not loading. I'm primarily using it for OS 9 for now, and I'm going to be busy for the next week so when I get to switching to OS X and pinging I'll update!
When it does freeze, I can move the mouse, the dock works, but the menu bar is frozen along with safari. I'll try downing ten four fox tonight if I have time!

did you try and force quit safari? It may be missing.

Safari opens and will load the first page or two but anything else will not load. Force quitting works most of the time, sometimes everything freezes
