| Wallstreet PDQ Doesn't Recognize Hard Disk |

I upgraded my Wallstreet to a 32GB mSATA drive in a 2.5" IDE adapter. However, I now have a problem. When I first booted the machine with my 9.0 CD, it initialized the hard drive. But now when I go to install the OS it tells me "The selected destination disk is invalid or has unexpectedly disappeared" and now it's not showing up at all. What happened? It's not on the desktop either.

Chances are it's the mSATA adapter or the 32GB drive itself, I've had similar issues myself (detects, then disappears, random crashes 5 mins after boot). Must have something to do with the older ATA controller in the Wallstreet and other Macs of this era not being fully compatible with the later ATA standard the mSATA drive and enclosure support. I'd suggest trying another mSATA drive (go for an Intel one), the generic enclosure are all the same with the same Jmicron chipset.

I noticed the machine froze when I tried to boot it again, which isn't great...
I guess I need an Intel one, dunno what I'll do with the one I have now if it doesn't work.
Yep, now the machine won't even boot my CD. This is bad.

I assume with the mSATA device removed, it boots up from the CD?
I'm in the same boat as you - I bought two Samsung 128GB mSATA drives and the 2.5" enclosures to suit for a good price. I'd like to try another brand of mSATA SSD but I'm not so keen to fork out for new drives, the Intel ones are notably the most reliable and you'd assume most compatible, but they're always overpriced compared to other brands.

Okay!
I did a PRAM reset and was finally able to install OS 9.0 to the mSATA!
I don't know WHY it fixed everything but it did!

Thanks for that hint. I put an IDE SSD into my WS and it wouldn't start up. I must try the PRAM reset.

the only one that has work "reliably" for me in any Powerbook is the JMicron JM20330. I strongly recommend either Sandisk or Toshiba mSATA units with these. Toshiba tend to be the most reliable (and ironically, the cheapest) on fleabay.
The older ones with the wrap around brass/aluminum heat sink were flaky.
I NEVER got the Marvel based units to work for more than a month before hitting the bit bucket.

The black ones from China for $7 work fine. I did have one die on me, but, it might have been a bad connection that finally went after rough handling.
JM20330 is what you want. Just wish there was an easy way to drop/lower the voltage to 4.2 VDC into the mSATA instead of the 5VDC... tends to run a bit warm.
