Color Classic w/ over 10 MB of RAM?
Posted by: LarBob on 2017-03-24 07:51:04
On this eBay listing, there is a Color Classic with 14 MB of RAM being shown in About This Mac. I would think the board was maybe swapped with a CCII/LC 550 board, but it still says it's a Mac Color Classic. What is going on here? It might be a noobish question, but did they swap it with a 550/CCII board and somehow change the about this mac identification? Or did they upgrade the onboard RAM somehow and just have 4 MB in the slots?

My guess would be that it has Virtual Memory enabled, given that "built-in memory" is still at 10MB.

Ditto, that's just a stock CC.  The only way (as far as I'm aware) to get around the 10MB limit while retaining the stock CC board is with a PDS accelerator that includes RAM like the MicroMac ThunderPro/ThunderCachcePro or the Sonnet Presto Plus.

Oh my gosh lol, I wasn't even thinking about that... My bad. That's embarrassing

It is weird it doesnt say virtual memory, so it may be anything alse also, say a ram doubler or the like.

Pretty sure a RAM doubler would, you know, double the RAM. 😛

But yes, RAM compression software could also be at play, but that seems less likely than just having 4MB of Virtual Memory set.

If you want your Mystic CC to display 'Color Classic' in the About this Mac window, you can use a software called I wish I were...

From there you can edit the gestalt ID of your Mac. Will still recognise the right amount of RAM and it will be just as fast.

But macosten is right, virtual memory must be on.

Edit: This got me thinking, could you use like 1GB of Ram on a SCSI2SD using Virtual memory??

Hard drive space if it was full will limit ram doubler.  Again its strange as macs will say if virtual memory is on.
