Panasonic SCSI CDROM for 5300?
Posted by: FacnyFreddy on 2017-03-19 09:21:12
Anyone have experience with the external/portable CDrom drives that look like portable players on the 5300 powerbooks?

I know I need a 30pin-DB50 pin cable setup, but, the CDrom drives I see on fleabay are the internal battery type.

Are these all junk or will they work for basic usage? (booting and installing Os 8.1)

Well, based on some private messages, it sounds like it will work!

I'll let everyone know once I get it running.

You can stick something like the CD Sunrise or FWB Toolkit on a Disk Tools floppy and it should work to access an external CD-ROM if you're looking to install from an external CD-ROM (works on pretty much any PowerBook, from 1xx to the later ones like the 2400)

As far as booting from a CD-ROM goes, couldn't do it on my 540c with the similar Panasonic drive (I believe KXL-D740) on its own but would work with a Disk Tools floppy with an appropriate extension

Thanks... this is the next thing I am working to do. A recovery floppy to install OS 7.6.1 from and then start a bare metal install on my 5300ce.
