Bus error/bomb on SE/30 repeatable in one game
Posted by: hunter44102 on 2017-03-12 15:16:03
Is there anything non-hardware related that would cause bus error/bomb restart?

On Lode Runner everything is great, then I click start new game, all is good, then I click the mouse button and I get the bus error bomb.   I can let the demo run forever and start game, but as soon as I click the mouse it bombs.

SE/30 with 7.5.5 and 8MB ram.

I tried the -exact- game (exact files) on my SE with 7.5.3, and it does not crash.

This is the only place this happens so far.

The board has been re-capped and looks pretty clean. Could it be memory or other chips?

Thanks

Software incompatibility is the most likely cause - try System 7.1, or it's a '030 thing

That's great I was getting worried but everything else seems to be running so far.

The SE/30 did that to me in Netscape 2.0 and later somehow gave Finder "illegal instruction" errors. I may have fixed it by enabling Mode32 and fixing the folder structure on my HDD with Apple Personal Diagnostics. If you're unsure of your logic board or hard disk, APD is one program that can test their integrity.

Installing more RAM on my SE/30 greatly reduced the number of time bombs I saw in day to day use. You can also increase the amount of memory allocated to a program with File --> Get Info.

This is a known issue specific to Lode Runner, according to the description at Macintosh Garden: "clicking in the main window crashes the game under some OS versions (but you can still play with keyboard control)."
