So my 8500 PSU just went pop..help!

Hooked up my 8500 after not using it for a while and the PSU went crack, followed by a not so great smell coming from the rear of the case.

I'm guessing replacing the PSU will be near to impossible? Unless I can find a fellow member with a spare.

I've read you can use ATX PSU's, is it hard to rewire? I dont mind fiddling with the odd LED circuit, but power supplies are a whole other ball game.

It would be pretty simple to pull it apart and recap, everything is pretty big.

If fixing it doesn't work out, OWC ships Internationally.

did it still work?   maybe it was just the ac filter cap?

In array from home till Sunday night, but I'll check when I get back. It was a pretty distinct smell, like something had burnt. So I suspect something in the PSU has popped.

How hard are they to remove from the case?

As easy as any pic, usually a screw or two, undo the wires and remove.

Well I've ordered a replacement PSU from a company on eBay, including shipping $65.

Its a chunk of money, but it will give me a replacement psu and a working machine.

Going to look at removing the existing one out from the powermac
