USB card for Q800?
Posted by: Arkas on 2017-02-18 17:13:50
Does anyone make a PCI card with USB that is compatible with the Q800?

Thanks.

No, it has Nubus slots and there is no USB.

But doesn't anyone make expansion cards that fit to give 2 USB ports?

Correct. No one makes nor has anyone ever made Nubus USB controllers. Mac OS 8.1 is the first to support USB with the right add-on software, but only on supported PCI based PPC Macs. There is no driver support for USB in 68k versions of Mac OS, so there was little incentive for hardware development to take place-- Nubus was quite obscure by the time there was market for aftermarket USB controllers, so the market would have been very small compared to the massive amount of hardware and software development required. It wouldn't have made commercial sense.

Does anyone know what methods are available to transfer content from a USB stick (or drive) to a Q800?

I think you'd have better luck with transferring files via a CompactFlash card or an SD card.

Look into the Floppy Emu (on a Quadra, you would plug it in via ribbon cable to your motherboard in the same socket that's currently connecting the motherboard to the floppy drive) or one of several SCSI to CF/SD solutions such as SCSI2SD or Artmix's CF AztecMonster.

FWIW, most late 90s USB (specifically, USB 1.1) was slow to the point that you wouldn't want to be using it for very long. Least that was the case when I had a G3 iMac.

CompactFlash and SD cards transfer files at faster speeds. You'll be happier with those.
