| Dove Marathon 030x/SE - questions | |
| Posted by: ScutBoy on 2017-01-29 19:08:03 I just opened up my second SE/30 recap candidate. I knew it had an accelerator, but wasn't sure what until now. It's a Dove Marathon 030x/SE. Doing a little googling, it appears this was originally released for the Mac IIx - a 32Mhz 68030 that dropped into the 68030 socket on the motherboard. I guess it makes sense that this would work in an SE/30, since it was said when the SE/30 was released that it was "a IIx in a compact case". My question is how to correctly and safely remove it from the processor socket so I can recap the board? It looks like it should come straight up, but I'm not sure how much force is necessary or how much is too much. Likewise, when I re-insert it, should there be anything special done to make sure it's in "all the way" and not going anywhere. I like that this still gives me the PDS slot if I want/need to put something else like ethernet or video into this guy. Thanks for any works of wisdom!  | |

| Posted by: ScutBoy on 2017-02-12 19:44:38 Just finished recapping the logic board on this guy today. Happy to say I don't seem to have messed anything up! The startup chime is more of a "Brrrp" but I attribute this to the accelerator. After the machine boots and the Dove extension loads, the sounds from the Control Panel, etc. are correct and loud. Since there was no sound before, I'm declaring victory! 🙂 The guy does have other problems; case is very yellowed, the floppy needs a good clean, and at least one of the mounts for the CRT to the front case is broken, since the tube moves around slightly- noticed when I was putting the logic board back in the case and putting on the back. If nothing else, the logic board and accelerator can go into a nicer SE/30, and this chassis can be my test mule and perhaps my first retr0brite guinea pig. | |
