| CC Question |
Posted by: Johnnya101 on 2017-01-26 12:27:25 I read that turning on and off the cc instead of using the soft power will kill the boards faster. Is this true?

Posted by: just.in.time on 2017-01-26 14:43:17 You should always use the soft power/special->shutdown to shut down. The computer won't turn back on without the switch being in the on position AND a press of the power button on the keyboard.
Once the computer is off, I don't see how turning the main switch to off as well would cause any harm.

Posted by: Johnnya101 on 2017-01-26 15:20:56 Obviously I'll do that!
Yeah that's what I was thinking too... anyone else?

Posted by: Macdrone on 2017-01-27 09:04:08 the boards die from leaky capacitors, yet to see one die for any other reason.

Posted by: Johnnya101 on 2017-01-27 09:18:18 I'll get the psu caps replaced soon too along with the analog

Posted by: Brett B. on 2017-01-27 09:41:25 I don't see how it would hurt the hardware but it could possibly corrupt the hard drive's contents. The point of "shut down" is to more or less park the file system so that no data is being written to the drive at the moment when the power is turned off. Used to happen a lot prior to Windows XP, it was really bad with NT.

Posted by: beachycove on 2017-01-27 10:27:33 Remember that turning off the switch at the rear will drain a pram battery, as it is then asked to maintain the settings independently of trickle power. If you've no pram battery, then it's a wash.

Posted by: Johnnya101 on 2017-01-27 11:52:57 So really I should leave it on all day (No soft power pressed, just switch)?
|
Posted by: EvilCapitalist on 2017-01-27 12:51:04 I don't really see any reason you'd turn the switch off if it's sitting on a desk plugged in. I can't imagine it draws much power switch on, powered off.
|
Posted by: just.in.time on 2017-01-27 12:54:46 I'm going to have to agree with evilcapitalist on this one, hence my initial confusion on the initial answer of the question. Unless you were planning on leaving the machine for 6 months or something like that I can't imagine why you would ever turn off the main switch.

Posted by: Johnnya101 on 2017-01-27 14:22:36 Ok, great! I'll probably turn it off at night or when I know I'm not going to be near it or use it (Old psu + constant trickle may not be the best)
|
Posted by: just.in.time on 2017-01-27 14:32:38 I feel like doing that every night will wear out the switch faster than leaving the main switch on will wear out the PSU if you are using it regularly.

Posted by: Johnnya101 on 2017-01-27 14:48:45 Ok then, so just leave it on?
|
Posted by: beachycove on 2017-01-27 15:32:21 Yes.
Why it's there perplexes me, given that it has soft power. To keep kiddies from starting them up in classrooms?

Posted by: Johnnya101 on 2017-01-27 17:18:03 Who knows!
Thanks for your help everyone!
EDIT:
