Regatta B8? System software
Posted by: unity on 2017-01-11 21:34:51
So I have a Classic II prototype from Dartmouth. For some reason I never looked at the About Mac box before today. The mobo looks pretty normal, but the About Box says "Apollo..................22". Well that is the code name for the Classic II, so I am going to have to look at the ROMs again and see how it can be calling up that name.

But the other odd bit is the System Software name, Regatta(B8). I am pretty familiar with Sys 7 code names - and I assume this is System 7 - but I dont recall this one at all. Anyone have any insight? Is this pre-release software and where would it fit? The Special menu is still Special. Nothing really stands out otherwise. MacWrite is licensed to Apple employees only. Pretty sure this was a sorta test machine sent off for some field work - pre-PVT sorta stuff. Oh, and I know ResEdit can do all sorta of wonderful things but based on the drive contents it was only used by a Bio Engineer who LOVED to name documents in all caps.

System 7.0.1 - I hate finding the answer after searching, giving up, posting, then searching again. Ugg...

What happens if you boot up normal 7.0.1 on it? The string may actually be in the System file, not the ROM. I think there's a table in there of machine models to gestalt ID. I could see a 7.0.1 beta having... different results.

Thats what I am thinking, I pulled the board and the ROMs are stock. I think the code name assignment may be a product of the software. I will try booting something else.
