Best StuffIt for System/OS 7?
Posted by: EvieSigma on 2016-12-25 11:18:38
I've got a couple System 7 machines and I know StuffIt Expander is vital for old Macs, but which version should I get? I've seen v5.5 recommended but I also see people using v4.0.2. Is it a case where the older version runs better on older hardware than the newer version? I honestly don't know.

I generally use stuffit 5.5, if I'm remembering correctly. The point of system 7 is to give more resources to apps, even if they are newer than system 7 itself. File archiving ops on old Macs are going to be slow regardless, so my view has always been that I may as well use the "best".

If you have the disk space for it, Stuffit Deluxe 5.5.0 or 5.5.1 is available hereĀ http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/stuffit-deluxeand should work well on systems 7.1 through 9. There are one or two things missing for "proper" OS 7 operation, but it does work without those things (and, you could probably add them to system 7.1, but I never bothered because Stuffit still worked fine.)
