Hello, everyone! After a few decades, I’ve gotten back into programming in Pascal on the Macintosh 512K.
I’m very happy with TML Pascal 1 (I only use LSP 1 for source code formatting ;-) ). The early MacTutor articles were a big help when I was getting started.
However, I’m now looking for the TML Pascal manual!
Thank you very much! | Posted by: thecloud on 2026-09-24 16:10:09 I bought TML Pascal for the Mac back in 1986 and remember this manual with its plastic comb binding. The fun thing about TML (besides "TML Systems" being just Tom Leonard at that point, IIRC) is that it was actually a suite of apps: Edit, Pascal, Link, RMaker. Unlike integrated development environments, you'd run Edit to write your code, then switch to Pascal to compile it, then run Link to link it, and RMaker to compile resources. Each app had a menu item to transfer you to the next app in the chain. I think its code generation compared favorably with MPW Pascal, but there wasn't much of a lower-end market for it once Lightspeed Pascal came along.
Anyway, there is a non-zero chance that I still have this manual tucked away in a box. Didn't find it in the box that I thought it was in, but if I run across it, I will be sure to scan it. | Posted by: retronym67 on 2026-09-24 19:34:17

You can find the manuals for other Macintosh Pascal systems from that era as PDFs, so it would be great if the same were true for TML Pascal.
I myself had read a comparison article about Pascal systems on the Mac in a UK issue of MacUser back in 1987. At the time, as the proud new owner of a Macintosh Plus, I went ahead and ordered Turbo Pascal. | Posted by: thecloud on 2026-09-24 19:48:09

At the time, as the proud new owner of a Macintosh Plus, I went ahead and ordered Turbo Pascal. Turbo Pascal was a real flash in the pan. Its compilation speed was so much faster than the others, but the generated code was worse. I seem to remember that apps built with Turbo Pascal did not survive the transition to the Mac II/68020; there was an eventual update to get 32-bit support working, and then they completely dropped the Mac version. | Posted by: retronym67 on 2026-09-24 20:05:41

I seem to remember that apps built with Turbo Pascal did not survive the transition to the Mac II/68020; there was an eventual update to get 32-bit support working, and then they completely dropped the Mac version. Back then, I could only afford one software package, so I chose Turbo Pascal. With what I know now—or if I’d had *MacTutor* magazine back then—I would have gone with Lightspeed Pascal (mainly because of the debugger).
Fortunately, these days you can install and try out all kinds of systems. Since I’m also working on assembly language programming these days, the ability of TML Pascal to convert Pascal into assembly source code is very insightful.
The only update for TurboPascal (1.1) should work on the Macintosh II. However, it is, of course, not 32-bit compatible. | Posted by: adespoton on 2026-09-25 20:03:19 Likewise, Turbo Pascal on a Plus was my first “real” Mac IDE. — I’d done lots on Apple IIs in BASIC, and played around in ResEdit manually editing CODE resources, but TP was my first foray into building complete stand-alone apps and dealing with pascal strings.
Much later I went back to explore TML to see what I’d missed, but I never found the manual. | Posted by: shirsch on 2026-09-26 08:04:51 I have (3) manuals here, but am not sure they're what you were looking for. I'm only interested in scanning the one with the comb binder, so let me know if it's of use? | Posted by: retronym67 on 2026-09-26 10:23:17

Thank you very much for your efforts. | | 1 |
