Recapping color classic analog board
Posted by: redace on 2026-09-23 19:03:53
Hello experts! Just extracted the analog board and was reviewing the suggested list of ones to replace on recap-a-mac's site. It's a far shorter list than the full kit from console5! Any tips? Start with the short list, then if still bad, keep going? There has to be 50ish parts in this kit! I do see what looks like some evidence of oozing, but hard to pinpoint the source. Attaching pics for opinions.View attachment 19326.jpgView attachment 19325.jpg

Some will test okay, but they're all old 90's capacitors. I'd replace them all.
As Corp Hicks said, "It's the only way to be sure."
Also clean up with qtips and ipa as you remove the caps. You want to make sure to get all the leaked electrolyte.

On a Colour Classic large mains voltage caps rarely need replacement, I agree with the Aussie recapamac guide. They're also quite expensive to source the large 120-240V caps. Recent recap of 2 x CC boards the removed caps were in spec and good condition except the 10V 5600uF parts (2 of).

FWIW, I've always followed the recapamac guide. Only replace the big ones on the mains voltage side of the PSU if you really need to.

The Color Classic is one of those Macs with the infamously brittle plastics. Before deciding whether to replace a few or all the caps, ask yourself how often you want to be opening the computer and removing the analog board. I'm a fan of "while you're in there," so I'm in the camp of "replace everything." It's a few extra dollars (the Console5 cap kit is an eyewatering $33), but it's peace of mind plus you'll know the analog board is as 100% as it can get. The same website has a resistor/diode mod that fixes the toasty diode and resistors they're known for, and for another $3 it seems like good, cheap insurance; when I redid my Color Classic analog board, I either didn't know about that $3 kit or it hadn't been released yet, and mine has quite the dark PCB underneath those two diodes.

One more thing that's often overlooked: It's non-essential, but check out the microphone along the top of the screen. There are two surface mount caps on it and they've leaked and corroded on my Color Classic and were starting to get a bit wet on my LC 550. I posted about the LC 550 here, but the same part is in the Color Classic. You'll want a pair of 4.7u 25v+ caps. If you have some shorties, you could use through hole parts as long as you bend the legs adequately.

Standard recap (13 mentioned on recapamac) and diode/resistor kits installed. But looks like I still have an issue with vertical deflection somewhere. Any thoughts?
