| Help! Scratched iron across Macintosh IIci traces next to UE9 |
Posted by: fauxvandepaar on 2026-09-23 13:33:03 Welp, I scratched my iron trying to recap my IIci and the traces that are broken are all directly next to UE9. My eyesight is not that great, so I would like to know what I did. |
Posted by: croissantking on 2026-09-23 14:24:16 Doesn’t look like you actually cut any traces, just scraped the solder mask. Or did you confirm broken traces? |
Posted by: fauxvandepaar on 2026-09-23 14:47:40 It doesn't chime or boot and on an LCD, just shows a white screen. I cleaned the corrosion. There is no death chime or start chime. I have a feeling there is a broken trace somewhere. |

Is there any continuity on this one? |
Posted by: fauxvandepaar on 2026-09-23 14:57:42 It appears that was some dust. It is not there anymore. |
Posted by: Froggy814 on 2026-09-23 14:58:39 Okay. Looked deep if it had been a damaged trace. Glad it was dust! |
Posted by: fauxvandepaar on 2026-09-23 15:27:11 Still trying to figure out what the problem is with the white screen and the possible scratches trace. |
Posted by: Callan on 2026-09-23 15:39:27 Was it working before you capped it? Are you hearing it chime? If so, do you have a nubus video card? I'd see if the video looks the same on it. If your iron slipped I'd also look around for un-intentional solder shorts (a glob of solder somewhere it's not supposed to be). If your suspicious of any broken traces you could always use a meter to check the continuity of the trace. |
Posted by: fauxvandepaar on 2026-09-23 15:41:21 It was working until I recapped it. It did have corrosion, but cleaning it off some of the chips fixed it. I do have a nubus video card from my Original Mac II. |

@fauxvandepaar you gotta beep the traces out. it's anyone's guess if they're broken or not. |
Posted by: fauxvandepaar on 2026-09-23 17:40:55 They appear to be good. Still having trouble with no sound and a white screen. |
Posted by: finkmac on 2026-09-23 17:45:50 does it output sound via the headphone jack?
are you using on board video?
if yes, which RAM bank is populated? |
Posted by: fauxvandepaar on 2026-09-23 17:49:19 It just pops. I had Bank A populated and I was using on board video. It doesn’t output to the known good video card from my original Mac II. Pressing reset doesn’t get rid of the white screen. |
Posted by: Boctor on 2026-09-23 21:57:48 Sounds similar to what was happening when the ROM wasn't being read. I'd check if it's walking the bus or if the mask ROMs are still good, or try slotting a compatible IIsi/IIci "universal" replacement ROM in and toggling the ROMSEL jumper. |
Posted by: fauxvandepaar on 2026-09-24 07:22:22 How can I check the ROMS? I don’t have a SIMM at the moment. |
Posted by: fauxvandepaar on 2026-09-24 08:16:03 Turns out, two CPU pins were touching. 🤦♂️ |
Posted by: finkmac on 2026-09-24 08:24:41 gahaha. it's always something silly like that 🙂 nice work |
