Studio Display leans back on its own
Posted by: derFunkenstein on 2026-09-14 20:36:16
I'm back with a new Studio Display issue. I liked the first one I have so much I got a second one at VCF Midwest this weekend. Everything seemed great on the show floor, but what I did not realize until I got it home is that the back leg is a little looser than it needs to be in order to keep it upright. So it slowly sliiiiiiiides back and the monitor gets tilted way too much over the course of about 5-6 minutes.

For now, I've got something heavy (a metal drive enclosure with two 3.5" SATA hard drives in it) sitting behind the foot and that works well enough. What I'd like to do is figure out what the likely cause is and try to fix it. Any suggestions would be super awesome. Thanks!

Sorry, I forgot to say. It's a 17" ADC model that has the stylings of the MDD. Reflective Apple logo on front and back.

The 17-20-23" acrylic Apple Cinema Displays were well known for having bad hinges early in the day, often related to the pig iron breaking off or hinges weak. Best repair method would be to fix the hinge to not move or if you want the factory look find a junk unit and switch over (as the 17" had bad backlights so a dead unit may be easily found).

With 3D printing, here are replacement hinges:

And fixed position stands (note this is for 15" model but might do)

Ah, since the hinge on this one swings in both directions I'm assuming the hinge is broken. Would have been nice if I'd figured that out before buying but c'est la vie. I was thinking about some two-part epoxy to just lock the hinge in place. Keeping it at the default angle is just about perfect for me; my other ones sits there and it's fine. The leg is perfectly intact, it's just that the hinge swings back and forward, and doesn't have enough resistance. If I lock it down as you suggest then I bet I'll be fine.
Mine does that too
good to know I'm not alone at least 🙂
