Posted by: l008com on 2026-09-13 02:36:23That game came on this CD Rom I got around 1995, I used to play it on my performa. Then years later when I got online, I used to play on the Internet. So much terrible lag 😀 But still it was fun. And the bots. Sometimes I'd just let bots run on maps for huge amounts of time and see what would happen.
Posted by: joevt on 2026-09-13 07:20:20I have Bolo in my Mac Shareware games folder. I don't think I've touched it since 2000.
I have XBolo for PPC Mac OS X. It can use the same maps but cannot network with the original version.
There was WinBolo for Windows and LinBolo for Linux (I haven't tried either of those). Looks like there's a recreation of WinBolo on Steam or the AppStore or Google Play for modern macOS, Windows, and Linux (probably also not compatible with the classic Mac OS version?)
I have Bolo.Binary for the Apple II that I played before that. Are they related? No, they're just both tank type games.
Posted by: JustG on 2026-09-13 07:30:40It's become a tradition when my brother comes to visit during Christmas that I break out a couple PowerBooks and we play Bolo for hours. Always a great time. We played a lot of LocalTalk network games growing up, he'd be on his LC and I'd use my SE/30. I was always jealous he could tell bases and pillboxes easier since he had color.

MG also has various pre-packaged configurations available.
We used to play it in university on a network of Pluses. I've replicated that with a network of Mini vMacs and a few brains to make things interesting. With 16 players per game and an extensible AI module format, there's lots you can do with Bolo 🙂
I wonder if anyone's tried creating a passthrough brain for a modern LLM?
Posted by: impressionist on 2026-09-25 08:23:05I quite enjoyed Bolo way back when. I think during Marchintosh a handful of people play although I have never managed to join.
Posted by: Dave928 on 2026-09-28 19:48:26used to play Bolo all the time.
Posted by: mausball on 2026-09-29 13:14:28Played for years. Currently working on my battery bombed SE/30 I pulled out of a years long storage to play again with my kids.
