Creating an internet with a Shiva EtherGate

I've seen a lot of posts asking how to configure a Shiva Ethergate, so I thought I'd make a video.

In this video we talk about internets. Not The Internet, but before that! Very early in its evolution, Apple delivered a truly incredible networking technology called AppleTalk. While other platforms required specialized IT staff and careful technical planning to build networks, Apple's solution was truly plug and play. It automatically figured out which machines were on the network and could self-organize to ensure smooth communication. The protocol ran over specialized LocalTalk hardware which was quickly replicated using cheap telephone wires and inexpensive transceivers.

As networking technology advanced, Apple began shipping built-in Ethernet hardware that ran at blistering speeds for the day and enabled file sharing for large graphics and data files. While these machines also included LocalTalk, customers quickly switched to the newer, faster protocols as their file sizes and the number of computers on the networks grew. This video explores how to use specialized hardware to bridge LocalTalk and Ethernet networks so that older Macs could access servers, printers and other machines using Ethernet.
