Proud new WGS 9150 owner.

I am the new owner of this bad boy. This seems to be the 80mhz model that was upgraded to 120. I know these are hard to come by but has anyone seen one like this? The badge is not even aligned.
It is loaded with AsanteFast Ethernet 10/100, ATTO siliconexpress IV scsi card, Radius 24-bit graphics I/F. G3 card is installed on the pds slot.

The board looks clean but I noticed a burnt type color around the component above the ROM slot. Anyone know what might be causing that. I didn’t notice that anywhere else.

That burnt mark is fairly normal and a known issue with this specific linear regulator (Linear Technology LT1085CM). It should be 12v input and 3.3v output. It's generating something like 8-9 watts in heat. According to another post on thinkerdifferent (https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads...ing-can-anyone-check-their-wgs-vr-temps.2613/) that regulator was measuring a temperature 80C+.

Components in that area "may" be subject to higher heat stresses but meh. Maybe throw on a heatsink on that regulator, that would definitely help dissipate heat.

Wonderful find. Love how its loaded with cards!

Radius 24-bit graphics I/F
That's not the specific model - it was used for multiple cards. What does the ROM say on it? Something like 24AC if it is the Apple version, or PC Pro 24X, 24XK if it is a Radius PrecisionColor?

I'm extremely jealous!

Thank you for detailed info. I will put small heatsink on it.

It’s says PC 24x v1.6. -0066-02.

Well, that is very strange. The 1.6 version ROM doesn't support PPC. I recommend getting either a 24x 2.0 ROM, or an Apple 24AC 1.1 ROM for it.

Good news is that it is the best of that family of cards with a 110MHz RAMDAC so it supports 24bit at 1152*870.

This is the Apple ROM - I'd use this as it means you can use the Apple Driver which integrates with the Monitors control panel. It gives fewer options, but I have never used any of the options the Radius driver gives anyway.

This is the Radius ROM, basically a newer version of what you already have that adds PPC acceleration :

Then you need to flash it to an appropriate chip... Erm, I will need to go and search to find what it is. I know I used Winbond brand chips, but forget the part number.

There are some instructions to mod the card to take two different ROMs and switch between them on my site here :

I have the apple and the Radius ROMs on my card.

Winbond 27C256 to just upgrade (specifically the Winbond part because they erasable). If you want to do the dual ROM mod, you'll need a Winbond 27C512.

Lots of people have the hardware to write one if you don't, so a friend with an interest in electronics that owns a TL866+ might be able to help. I'd send you one, but the shipping would cost more than the ROM by some way.

Thank you. At some point I’ll need to bite the bullet and buy the EPROM. I have another one of these cards that I need to dig up and check what version it has—hoping it’s 2.0.

That badge is home made, Apple silkscreened the speed on the case.

Bummer it didn't have the 5 drive tray, but otherwise a very cool machine I wish I had one.

Oh, that makes sense why it is not properly aligned.
A 5-drive bay would take another level.

@Phipli i found another card that has PC24XK V2.0 007-03a. I am guessing this will play nicely with 9150?

The 2.0 ROM means this one is PPC compatible, but note the XK version is limited to a maximum of 1024*768.

What speed is the RAMDAC? It will either have an 80 or a 110 written on it.

The RAMDAC is here and is either an Analog Devices or a Bt part.

RAMDAC is 80.

RAMDAC is 80.
Same as mine - some 24XKs shipped with a 110MHz RAMDAC, which means they're actuall a 24X (the top end model) with the 24XK ROM.

Ours have the RAMDAC that is technically only rated for 80MHz (and so 1024*768)... But I'll let you into a secret... My 24XK happily runs at 1152*870 when flashed with the 24X ROM, even if it technically is overclocking it 🙂

Wow, that is super cool! Now I really need to buy that EPROM. Thanks for all the information and for your help with this.
