| Growing software shelf |
Posted by: CuriosTiger on 2026-08-16 22:28:59 With some recent purchases from mattsoft here on the forum, my software shelf is growing. I'm trying to get it to something approximating what a retail shelf would've looked like in a 1990s computer store. Yes, it's a bit of a mix of old and new, yes, there's some non-Mac stuff mixed in, and yes, the bottom shelf is hardware. But it's a work in progress. |
Posted by: Byrd on 2026-08-17 00:33:49 That's a nice lot! In Australia it was really rare to see boxed Mac games; Apple Centers, Choice Connections only ever had a couple on shelf (if at all), while another stockist Streetwise Software in Hawthorn, Melbourne did have but I could never afford. |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2026-08-17 09:11:44 Good memories. I grew up in Apple's backyard, so we had a lot of little independent "Apple Authorized" stores. They were important because the big stores almost never carried Macintosh software or hardware, and if they did, it was almost always a pathetic selection.
My friends and I discovered a chain of camera stores called Wolf Camera that was basically our secret goto store. Despite being a camera store, they had an impressive selection of Apple related hardware and software. Especially high end stuff that was just really cool to look at it and drool over as kids. Gargantuan color Supermac & Radius monitors and their extremely expensive video cards to drive them.
I remember going to the store with my friend and his dad so his dad could buy a giant (21"?) two-page B&W monitor and video card for his dad's Macintosh SE. That was a lot of fun.
@CuriosTiger Get a second shelf for the older software and put a sign over it that says, "Discount Software 50% off!" |
Posted by: Unknown_K on 2026-08-17 09:31:37 I used to find tons of 68k/ppc software most of it boxed (just didn't bother with games but I have a few). I also snagged the early versions of OSX and some OSX video editing apps.
Seems odd to me that people spend a mint on hardware but just download all the software. |

It has been some time (for me, at least). Are you the one who snagged DC from Matt before I did?? |

But I missed out on his BDC copy by minutes, apparently. A little bummed about that, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.
On the plus side, I got my name in the RtDC credits now. π |

Heh, I don't think this is going to leave my possession except in an estate sale! |

I have an ambition (in retirement) to create a genuine museum of the kind that's open to the public, and I'd definitely want some of the software boxes on display. I'm slowly adding; currently looking for MacOS 8 and 9 boxes. |

Never got into collecting software here, apart from some OS boxes. Convenience of downloading I guess and knowing once I start I'll never stop |
Posted by: zefrenchtoon on 2026-08-18 03:00:25 @CuriosTiger I never knew about a version of Crystal Quest on CD-ROM !! π΅
After checking the Garden, I can see that a scan of your bow and/or CD would be appreciated. Someone had uploaded iso of 2.2.5 and in comments someone asked about differences with floppies version.
Also, I'm jealous about some of your boxes ... ππ€© |

DM me if you are interested. |

Hah... as someone who used to stock retail shelves in the 1990s when I wasn't out back in the repair pit, the first trick is to get those cheap metal shelving units and then slap posters and pricetag slides all over them to disguise the fact that they're cheap metal shelving units π
Also, remember that every 3 feet or so you need to clear some shelf space to display an "attract" box face-forward. The general rule of thumb was, you put boxes face-forward where it was something that would draw the eye from across the store, but was high priced -- and then put the cheaper stuff you were trying to move right beside it.
Norton Utilities made for a great attract box. |

DM me if you are interested. I wouldn't want them thrown out, but I'm not quite ready for a large influx at the moment. Redoing my actual RetroRoom where I store and display these things. |

Sorry, I mistyped the word "box" π No worries, I just literally didn't make that connection. I don't really have a way to "scan" the box, but I can certainly photograph it. |

They aren't being thrown out, They are currently in boxes in the cellar waiting to be auctioned off on ebay.fr or ricardo.ch. If you happened to be coming to Bern sometime, I'll show you them. |
