Then I got interested in getting Eudora to run proper e-mail in and out. At the moment, a Mac mini serves as a translator. Set up postfix as an SMTP bridge, and built a Stunnel/NGinX POP3S/TLS tunnel for incoming e-mail. Works beautifully.
The real challenge was Eudora itself. 3.1.3 is Lovely and it runs well under System 7.1.1 Pro on the LCIII. But modern headers clutter my mails, and there’s no proper UTF8 parsing… so special characters are a total nuisance. Especially in standard headers (like to: and from🙂. Since my name includes some wonky characters… this needed fixing!
After digging through the Executable with ResEdit, I found an STR# location that stores the headers Eudora filters out when “blah blah blah” is turned off. So that was relatively straightforward. My list (if additional headers) now includes :
x-char
x-uidl
x-mailer
p1-
ua-
original-encoded
errors-to
x-list
delivery-
disposition
x-spam-
x-pm-
authentication-results
dkim-signature
arc-
delivered-to
mime-version
x-icl-
x-proofpoint-
x-authority-
x-jn
And x-google- ;-)
Next was the UTF8 encoding. Hard! And annoying. But it turns out there’s great disassembly tools out there. I traced Eudora’s 68k code (with some help from ChatGPT) and found the RFC-2047 header decoder in CODE 60 / Lex822, specifically the old Fix1342 routine. Eudora could already decode Q/Base64 encoded headers, but it rejected utf-8 because it simply didn’t recognize the charset. I managed to patch Fix1342 to recognize UTF-8 and added a small 68000 conversion routine. It converts UTF-8 characters to ISO-8859-1, after which Eudora’s own existing conversion table turns them into MacRoman. And to my surprise… it works flawlessly.
If anyone is interested, I could upload the patched Eudora Binary. It fixes both the Headers thing and the UTF encoding. | | 1 |
