Pretty happy with it, has most of the accessories and I got it for free.
However it does seem to have some power issues. At first it turned on just fine, but after putting it in sleep mode it wouldn't wake back up, no fan / HDD noise. I found out that unplugging it for 1-3 minutes made it able to turn back on, but it still happens whenever it goes back into sleep mode.
After figuring this out, I just left it in sleep mode overnight. However this morning it wouldn't turn on again. I unplugged it, waited a bit, then plugged the cord back in, but nothing changed. Unlike with the previous issue, the fan and HDD do start up, but the chime doesn't play. They don't turn off either, they stay on until I manually hold in the power button or unplug it.
After that I did open it up and changed the PRAM battery (correct orientation, 3.63V according to my multimeter, old one was 0.68V), but nothing changed.
What else can I try? Is there something similar to a CUDA reset button like on the G3? I did try resetting PRAM via the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys, but I don't think that would work anyway as it doesn't chime.
Also, what are some good affordable replacement screens that DON'T ship from the U.S? There's a vertical line on the original one, and there's what might be mold inside the LCD as can be seen in the picture. | Posted by: Juror22 on 2026-05-23 22:47:08 Sorry I just saw this post, I hope that you have made some progress with this (there is a reset button).
If not, you really should get a copy of the service source (they have some excellent troubleshooting)
Either search for the 'apple service source g4 17 original' or just go to MacDat's page (quite a nice trove actually) https://www.macdat.net/repair/apple_docs.html | | 1 |
