DeskScene by PBI Software - Anyone seen it?
Posted by: olePigeon on 2026-05-05 08:53:12
Has anyone seen this Desk Accessory for System 6 before? It's called DeskScene by PBI Software. It appears to let you set a full picture for your desktop instead of a desktop pattern. I know there are likely many others like it, but I couldn't find much information on this particular one online. Doesn't appear to be on Macintosh Garden, either. Pulled these images from an eBay auction.

I think it's neat because it's for B&W System 6. Desktop Pictures software were a dime a dozen for color System 7.

Just my luck. Disk looks like it went through an EMP. 🙁

:\ That's too bad -- it looks totally and methodically wiped.

I had a friend who had that back in the early 90s. Seemed to work reliably. Haven't seen it since, until now.

I used another one called DeskPICT for a while; it was a DA that let you set any PICT as a desktop background. Unfortunately, I have no idea where that is either; I went looking for it in my collection a while back and couldn't find it.

on a whim I searched https://discmaster.textfiles.com/ for "deskscene", and a few files showed up. I see a compactpro archive, and a bare executable file.

@finkmac Nice sleuthing. The .cpt is just a picture, but the executable looks to be correct. 🙂

Too bad it's not a disk image, but it's a start. Should be a bootable floppy disk. Perhaps I can reconstruct it.

Thanks!
